I wish I could take credit for the Credit Card Revolution. But that is beside the point. When I wrote the blog "Days of Our Fathers" a few weeks ago, I was hoping to start a mini-revolution. I decided that I had taken enough abuse from the credit card companies, and I wasn't going to take it anymore.

The big picture however, went beyond the credit card companies. The real problem that needed correcting was my dependence, indeed, my addiction to using credit. I am not alone either. Americans nationwide are addicted as well. Like the tobacco industry, the credit card companies have gotten us hooked. They have wiggled their way into the fabric of our economy, into the core of our beings. We have been seduced into the "Buy Now, Pay Later" scheme that has grown into a destructive monster more frightful than Godzilla. Cash rewards, mileage plus rewards, free hotel rooms; the pusher man has tricked us, taken advantage of our weakness, fooled us by giving us something for free.

Finally, we have begun to sober up. We aren't going to take it anymore!

It was with great satisfaction that I read the news. Consumer borrowing has plunged! Of course, the Wall Street pundits predicted that the economic slowdown would have a somewhat stifling effect on borrowing, but they didn't anticipate what may become, hopefully, a revolution!

A survey by Reuters predicted that consumer borrowing would decline by an annual rate of $1 billion.

Since January, consumer borrowing has declined by an annual rate of $7.48 billion!

The decline was led by a record drop in consumers borrowing on credit cards, which fell at an annual rate of $7.8 billion, or 9.7%!

So let the credit card companies know, we are taking back our dignity. We won't be cowered by threats of lowered credit limits, or timidly accepting of arbitrarily imposed interest rate hikes. Americans are taking back control of our economic welfare!

The revolution has started! To the credit card pusher man, we say, "We don't need your stinking credit cards!"  America, stand up and fight! Reclaim your freedom to be fiscally solvent, and exercise your right to practice economic discipline. I am doing it, and I hope you will too!

It's time we finally showed the credit companies what the score really is!

Hey Mike:  For years now, I've only used ONE credit card, and I never carry a balance.  Convenience is the primary reason I even use one.  Thank God, I never developed the habit of using credit haphazardly.

I think we all have had a time in our lives when we needed to use our credit cards. I just got decreased on one...but not the other....same company too. Go figure.

Hi Michael: I half agree with you.  I think Americans should stop charging things and racking up debt.  However, now is the worst possible time to start as it is those "consumer purchases" that are driving our economy.

Tom Boos (Sine & Monaghan GMAC Real Estate) Tom, you serve as an example of how we should all aspire to! That is the responsible way touse credit.

Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman HAWAII Relocations & Real Estate (Century 21 Liberty Homes) Okay, maybe we need to have one or two cards. Paying the balance off every month, now that is what I want to preach about using them.

National Credit Fixers - Matt Listro Matt, I am somewhat ambivalent too. In the other blog, Days of our Fathers, I mentioned that if everyone did cut back on purchases it would forestall the economic recovery. Mainly because people won't have the discipline to wait until they have the money before they purchase. My hope is that we will continue to participate in  the economy, but not with the credit cards.

Michael.. I think the credit card companies are a BIG culprit to the economy right now.  Have you heard the things they are doing?  You should check out my blog "Scams The Credit Card Companies are pulling".  They are forcing their customers that have good/excellent credit to make up for the ones that aren't paying.  But the way they are doing this, they are making all our FICO scores lower... I could just scream.

I wish there was something I could do about it.

I am joining you Michael.  I have used my credirt cards to help me set up my business(you know how expensive it is).  My bank that I use for all of my personal and business accounts is the credit card provider.  They told me they were doubling my rate.  I always pay on time and more than the requirement and they are still raising it.  I am joining your revolution.  I wish you the best.

Valerie Osterhoudt, ABR ~ Cromwell, CT Real Estate ~ 860.883.8889 (Johnson Real Estate, Inc.) Valerie, don't despair! It will take time, but we all just have to wean ourselves off of our dependency on credit cards. We all got hooked because it was so convenient. I found that just by making the effort to always carry a little more cash, I don't automatically just "charge it". So what if I don't get the cash back reward or the airline miles. The tradeoff just isn't worth it! (I'm heading over to read your post now!).

Nate Rowe, Homes in Richmond VA Realtor in Richmond VA, (Oakstone Properties, Homes in Richmond VA ) Nate, welcome to the Revolution! Imagine when the day comes that they will be trying to win us back!  After all the terrible poliies they have enacted, I am sure they count on us having short memories. NO WAY, NO HOW! WE WILL NOT FORGET!!

I have not used a credit card in years with the exception of when it is needed.  Ex: rental car.  I would rather pay in cash.
