Special offer

So you're certified specialist - Legally you can't advertise it.

Okay if I have to admit I was wrong or more appropriately I was given the wrong information.  Here's what I was told and becasue of the comments posted I went back and asked again.

"Here's a little known fact at least to me anyway.  Did you that all the certifications and designations the gurus are offering to give you an edge in the market place can't be used in advertising with your designations from the National Association of Realtors?

You may very well have paid thousands to become a certified short sale specialist or REO superstar but unless that certification was obtained and provided through the NAR you can't use it with your other designations."

The correct interpretation of what was being discussed is this:

There is a policy dealing with how local associations deal with designations, but it does not apply to member’s usage. Regarding members... A member can advertise that they have earned any designation that they so choose. They can advertise this accomplishment in a way that “shares space” with the REALTOR® logo. Only NAR approved designations can be entered into a member’s NRDS record. Only NAR approved designations will be included on member credentials at NAR meetings. Anything more restrictive would be an attempt to limit a member’s ability to compete, and so is not permitted.

Brian -- I am not sure I know what rule would prohibit using these other designations?  Where did you find this?

Is that really true, Brian? I know that NAR doesn't recognize the other designations, and that in NAR directories, on NAR name badges, etc you can only use NAR designations, but I've never heard that in our personal marketing we can't combine the two.

Well that's interesting I wonder how many people realize this.  I've never even heard about this.

All - I think I need to clarify because you've made me question my source.  The source is the Ada County Association of Realtors and the rule is if you're using the Realtor logo in any ad the only designations you're allowed to use are NAR approved.

I have put in a call to the association to pin point the exact law.  I will post when I have it.  They don't police it because it's so widely abused but it's still there as a rule is what I've been told.

Thanks for this, Brian.  There are all kinds of designatinos out there.  I have a CSP from the National Association of Homebuilders, CLHMS from the Institute for Luxury Home Marketing and I use them all the time with my GRI, everywhere.  Let us know what you find out.

Brian, this is very interesting. Common sense tells me Realtor cannot pretend a designation(s) is from issued by NAR. If a Designation is placed in a position (parallel with NAR designations), it might cause confusion.
