Promoting Your Blog - Day 3 of Build a Better Blog Challenge
The Day 3 task was taking some steps to promote one's recent list post - ours was "5 Ways to Recommend Price Reductions to Sellers" . Darren at Problogger states that one mistake bloggers make is making attempts to promote their blog as a whole by driving traffic to to the blog's home page instead of promoting individual blog entries. He goes on and says do not just leave it to chance that your post will be read but take the initiative to do some steps to promote it !
Below are some of the specific steps that we did. Thanks to Bill Gassett, I already am a little bit familiar with some of these strategies:
1. Outside.in - Outside.in is a service that reports news for each individual city and even by neighborhood. We have our blog linked to Outside.in so when I post a blog I can choose to post it there. That was done for this blog post for "Philadelphia" .
2. Topix - I shortened the article and posted it on Topix which is another main news source. I have the ability to do this as I am an editor on Topix (thanks to reading a Bill Gassett post).
3. Localism - Active Rain allows you the option to have your post go to Localism.
4. Twitter - We have our blog post that are not "members only" to be posted to Twitter. Sometimes for members only posts, I will tweet them individually based on the post.
5. Facebook - Our tweets are updated to Facebook
6. Linkedin - Our blog posts are updated to Linkedin.
7. Related Posts - I went back to a couple of other blog posts and adding a link to my new blog post as a "related post".
It will be interesting to see what happens with this extra promotion in terms of traffic. I will remember to take the initiative a little more in the future as well.
There were several other suggestions that Darren made that I am very interested in learning more about which included "Pitching Other Bloggers", "Social Bookmarking" , "Pitch Mainstream Media" and "Article Marketing" .
