Hi All,

I have been mulling over some of the things that I have learned since Project Blogger and my arrival on Active Rain began.  Since they happened within three days of each other, I am still very much in the "Oooh, Ahh, Wow look at that" stage of my blogging life.  And, while it may seem like I have been here forever, I have only been on the scene since March 31 really.  So, forgive me if I gush about things that I have discovered or ideas I have come up with.  Just chalk it up to enthusiasm and lingering newbieness.  Now, on to the business at hand...

One of the tools that I have been using to great effect since right after the Project Blogger contest started is Google Analytics.  For anyone who is not familiar with it, Google Analytics, when attached to your personal blog or website will give you accurate, real world statistics on what your site is doing and how it is doing it.  This program tracks overall visitors to your site, unique visitors and returning visitors.  It also lets you know an overall average of how many pages are being viewed by each visitor, how much time each visitor is pending, again on average, perusing your site and where they are coming from (browser and referring site or direct), entering from (what article brought them in) and exiting from (what article are they leaving from).

It will also show you your "Long Tail" statistics.  For anyone who, like me, before I attended Dustin's lecture in March had heard the term "Long Tail" but had no idea what it meant or why it is important, I will try to explain it as I understand it.  The long tail shows you in a graphic representation how well you are doing getting unique, (meaning visit one time and never come back), and returning visitors to your site.  The overall goal is to build a site that effectively does both.  Brings in the new reader but then engages them so that they will return again and again and again.

Why am I telling you about this stuff?  Because, I am going to offer to disclose my stats, show my my digets, toss out my numbers for all to see with regard to my site Route66Living.com and am asking/issuing a challenge to the other apprentices to do the same.

I am learning that by watching these numbers, I can start to fine tune my offerings to my audience.  By watching the numbers rise or fall depending upon what is on my site, I can, hopefully continue to offer information that interests, engages and entertains my readers enough so that they will come back to visit again and again and again.  I can also see, by watching bounce rates (who came in and immediately left) if I perhaps tickled a no-no spot and got folks to visit my site who were thinking that it would be something else entirely.

Now, I am by no means an expert on Google Analytics or on how to use the information. And I am quite sure that I am not using all of its features to my best advantage.  But, the parts that I "get" are proving interesting and valuable to me.  Also, in light of the PB event, I think it would be really interesting to see real numbers on how many people we are getting to read what we are writing.  And isn't that the point?  Oh, and you can also see what percentage of your readers are coming via Active Rain and what percentage are coming from other sources like Google searches, etc.

So, without (much) further ado, here are  some screen shots of my most current stats from when I first applied Google Analytics April 15, several days into the competition to now May 19.

This is the top half of the first pageof the dashboad on Google Analytics showing my overall number of visits to date 891 and my overall number of page views 2292.  It also shows that the average visitor on Route66Living.com is looking at 2.57 pages per visit and remaining on the site 3:34 Minutes.

Route 66 Living Analytics Info 1

This is the second half of the page showing the referral sources by percentage and also the total number (519) of unique one-time visitors, thus far.  The balance 372 visitors are returning to my site multiple times.

The referral sources break down as follows: 573 visits or 64.31% are Referring Sites, 296 or 33.22% are coming directly to the site without using a referral source, 21 visits or 2.36% are coming via Search Engine and 1 visit or 0.11% are getting there by other sources

Of the referring sources Active Rain is responsible for 262 visits or 29.41% of my traffic the balance is coming from other means.

Route 66 Living Analytics 2

Here you see the number of page views total, average page views per visitor and average time spent per visitor on the site.  What this tells me is that when people are visiting my site, they are actually reading my posts and not just popping in.

If I were to suddenly start seeing a really high number of visits and the page views and time spent on the site radically declining, I would have to assume that something that I did or wrote was being found, but not by people who were looking for my site.  Since I can look at these statistics on a daily basis, I might be able to figure out what I did to correspond with the dip in visits or an increase in traffic.

Route 66 Living Analytics 3

And here it is... Last but certainly not least, the beginnings of a long tail.  I am very pleased to see that my returning visitors rate is rising steadily.  88 people have visited 2 times, 43 have come back 3 times, 25 = 4 times, 13 = 5 times, 12 = 6 times, 9 = 7 times

Now here are the really cool numbers, 38 have returned 9 -14 times, 39 = 15 - 25 times, 40 = 26 - 50 times, 50 = 51 - 100 times and 6 = 101 - 200 times.

Looking at just the number of readers that have returned to view Route66Living.com 9 or more times, I can deduce that I have about 173 regular readers.

Pretty cool I think.  And I deeply appreciate every single one!

Route 66 Living Analytics 4

Attaching and accessing the Analytics info to your site is really simple, just register for Google and then follow the directions on the home page that links above.  I did it all by myself and now that they have changed the appearance of the site somewhat, it is easier for me to read and understand.

Now, it's your turn.  Show me your stuff!

Take care all, help lots of people and have a nice day!

Tisza, (I just love your name BTW) Thanks for showing us all your stats.  I have heard wonderful things about Google Analytics, and your screen shots just prove that I need to get with it and start tracking my own sites.  It seems so much better than the stats I get from my webhost.  Thanks for the push.  Sherry

Hi All,

Mike - I am glad you are enjoying the sharing.  For me that is and has been the very best part of this entire experience, in and out of the contest.  Thanks for reading.

Linda - Oh my gosh, I THOUGHT that was you but I couldn't be sure, why you look even younger and thinner in text than you do in your dot.  Thank you for being a loyal, active and supportive reader.

You have voted for week five already, right?  If not, here's the link Week Five Voting.

Take care all, help lots of people and have a really super day!

You are monitoring every thing eh?

Do not spend your valuable time in too much monitoring.

Hi Sherry,

I am glad to be of service.  It is a really fun tool to play with and I enjoy it a great deal.  Nothing like throwing a bag of popcorn into the old nuker, settling back and watching the numbers climb.

Take care and have a super rest of the weekend!

Hey Tisza,

Thank you so much for sharing your info. I somehow missed the info previously on Google analytics, I'll need to check it out myself. I've been using an advance access site for a while, and I do review my stats at least monthly, however I'm not so sure it's as detailed as you've provided.

I'll be following up soon!

Hi Nalliah,

Now THAT is a cool name!  Yes, I am watching everything, partly because right now in the midst of the Project Blogger contest any information that I can get to fine tune my site, I am looking to get.  Especially because I know that when this event is over I will lose that ready access that I currently have to an intelligent, skilled and knowledgeable resource, my coach Drew Meyers.  So, while I have access to his increasingly busy ear, I am trying to make the most of it.

I am also a major geek and things like this have always appealed to me a great deal.  I love numbers and statistics (Boy, did I land in the right field, huh?) and this site gives me almost my fill of both.  Also, I think that it is important to disclose this information.  Seeing what our actual read and view rates are gives everyone an idea of how well what we are doing, or trying to do is working.

As a learning tool for everyone in and out of the contest, having these types of statistics available is invaluable.  If your numbers are not increasing somewhat consistently, then I think it tells you that you need to fine tune your site.

Also, as a blog site owner, I can tell you that since everyone who reads my posts does not comment on them, without these numbers I would have no concrete way of discerning whether or not anyone was out there looking at Route66Living.com at all.

Thank you for your comment and for reading my posts.  I appreciate both.

Have a super day!

Tisza---I am also one of those dots. You are a pleasure to read. Question for you-Are you Word Press or Blogger? Did someone set up your site? You may have talked about this but I missed it.

Hi Lynda,

Boy, the comments are coming in so quickly that I can barely keep up.  What I showed you is just scratching the surface of what this tool can do.  Almost every catagory for stats has several sub-catagories and there are a whole bunch of things that it would track that I don't even understand let alone use.

It is probably just as well that I don't understand it all.  I could easily see myself diving headlong into the numbers and between that site, AR and Route66Living.com, never coming up for air again.

Take care, good to hear from you and have a super day!

Hi Sandra,

Yup, I recognize you... you are the third from the left standing next to the soda fountain, right?

In answer to your question, I am currently using Wordpress.  The site as you see it is a collaboration of mine and Drew's.  Drew provides the in-depth technical know-how and I provide all of the content at this point although I am hoping to get additional contributors soon.

However, that being said, every pixel, byte or code that you see there I had a hand in at some level.  I chose the theme, after trying several different ones on for size.  I took all but one of the photos that appears in my header.  The white corvette is courtesy of Flickr.  I also asked for the Kiva and One.org links to appear on the sidebar.

In addition, I have added every site that appears on the blogroll myself, I have researched and linked every link that appears under the resources tab myself, and, of course I monitor and respond to every comment made on the site myself.

I also took all the pictures and created the visual tour that appears under the post about the Claremont Farmer's Market myself.

I will soon have a post about Cruise Night in Claremont up on the site and have crafted a virtual tour to accompany that as well.

I joined Active Rain three days before I was selected as Drew's apprentice and I had no idea any of this would be happening.  I actually found out that I would be his pick about 15 minutes or so, before he announced it to everyone here.  Because he and I both came a bit later to the party than some other coach/apprentice teams did, and because we did not know each other at all until we began working together, we really had to hit the ground not just running, but sprinting.  As a result, everything that happens or has happened on Route66Living.com has happened right before everyone's very eyes.

We debated (for about half a second) about building the site quietly out of the spotlight and then launching it fully formed a few weeks into the contest, but we both felt that using this approach was, for us anyway, the wrong way to go.  A big part of blogging is transparency.  And a huge part of this event, contest aside, is helping to try to create a sort of blueprint for future bloggers who wish to do this themselves.  By building the site from the very ground up in front of God-and-everybody, we are trying to help provide some of that blueprint.

Sure, it is great if you want to, or are financially able to hire someone to build a site for you that is fully optimized and ready to go so that all you need to do is plug in the words.  But, I alas, am in neither the financial position, nor truth be told, desirous of having that done for me.

I liken building this site to cooking.  Both of which I love, by the way.  When you need a cake for instance, you can choose to get it one of three ways: 1) Decide you want a cake and go out to the store and buy one.  2) Decide you want a cake, use boxed mix and canned frosting and make one.  3) Decide you want a cake, take out the cookbook, read all the recipes, decide which one you like best, shop for what you will need, follow the instructions, measure the ingredients, make the frosting from scratch and serve one.

All will get you a cake, they may all be pretty good cakes too.  But the one that you make from flour, sugar and everything else will have one ingredient that the others may lack.  Love.  Having done all of the above, and being a pretty darn good cake baker, if I do say so myself, I can tell you that there is a difference between the first and the last way to accomplish the same goal.  You can see it, you can feel it and ultimately, you can taste it.

I believe that building a site is the very same thing.  I want the love, the sweat, the tears of frustration and the shouts of exaltation all in there.  I want it to be something that looks, tastes and feels like me.  I want it to be something that I can look at with pride and say, "Yup, that's mine, good, bad or burnt to a crisp. I did it, and if I can do it you certainly can too."

I hope that answered your questions.  Thank you so much for the compliment and please keep reading, enjoying and interacting.  That is what makes this really fun!

Take care, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!

Tisza, good post and nice of you to share. Sorry, I have much less to share, although I entered code for analytics to setting, I missed the end > (pay attention)  I would like to know how many comments, if any, you've received from non-members. I've only received two.

Hi All,

Kelli - I am thrilled to hear that I was able to inspire someone.  Write often, the only way blogging works is if you actually put words on the page.  Enjoy the camaraderie and the community both are available here in abundance.  And thank you for reading my offerings and posting a comment.  I am glad to make a new friend.

Gary - I just went to check that out and must say that this is difficult for me to ascertain.  I know that I have had two responders on Route66Living.com who were not part of the Active Rain community, but I really don't have any way of telling where the others came from beyond searching for them here to see if they are members.  Also, the fact that they may be members of AR does not necessarily mean that they found my site here.

Also, since it had not occurred to me to track that, I have not got a system in place to do so.  It might be interesting to find out, but truthfully, I am more interested there in what will make the phone ring ultimately.  I am also quite aware that even conservatively speaking, only about one in one hundred readers usually comments on anything unless you happen to touch a nerve for good or ill.

Take AR for instance, I may have a read rate of 3000+ on a post and still not generate more than 7 comments.  Especially if the post is not a featured one.  Featured posts always skew the numbers because simply by their placement, they tend to generate a whole lot more interest and response than their non-featured brethren.

So, while they may be reading, they aren't always telling.  And they may not feel compelled to respond even if they like what they see.  I know that adding a call to action, by ending a post with a question directed at the reader attempting to elicit a response might increase the number of comments, but then again it might not.  So, I am looking more at how many are coming back for second or 20th looks at the site.  If those numbers are rising, whether they are commenting or not, I know that my site and my content are doing their jobs.

I hope that answered your question.  Oh, and thank you for the comment left on Route66Living.com.  I appreciate it greatly.

Take care all, help lots of people and have a wonderful day!
