Meeting Our Beloved Pets Again

Rainbow's BridgeThis post isn't about real estate.  Not directly anyway.  It's about a neat site one of my sellers told me about.  I take time to make small talk with my customers.  It's not small to me.  I really do enjoy connecting with people this way.  Sometimes this means it takes longer to get things done (I had a 5 hour listing presentation once!) but I really do enjoy the connections I make with my customers.

I have a seller who rescues Dalmatians.  He presently has five in his home.  But these 5 are all his.  Steve's home is their home.  Some are maimed from when they were with previous owners.  It's heartbreaking.

Steve has lost beloved animals in the past.  If you are an animal lover, I know you understand.  A pet is not "just a dog" or "just a cat."  A pet is part of the family.  They are special little creatures who love unconditionally.  Feeling crabby?  Everyone else in the house may stay clear of you, but Fido doesn't mind.  He still comes running and wants to play with you.

Steve showed me a beautiful framed picture of a rainbow and an open gate.  I read the writing on it and was touched.  He told me about the site Rainbow's Bridge.  It's a virtual memorial for pets.  Beloved pets who have passed on can frolic and play there as they await their masters' arrival on the rainbow bridge.

Other animal lovers stop by, read the memorials and sometimes offer their condolences and words of support.  Connecting with others who have lost beloved pets makes the grief a little easier to get through.  I thought the site was special enough to pass on to others.  Enjoy your visit!

This post was inspired by one of Active Rain's resident animal lovers, Lysa Napolitano.  Any little critter who needs help is lucky to be in her path.  Thanks for all you do for the little helpless ones Lysa!

One night our cat went into seizures and was dead within 15 minutes. My wife and I didn't know how to break the news to our 6-year old daughter. We are both Christians so in the morning we told Kelly that her cat had gone to heaven. She got really sad. I would be very surprised if we didn't see our pets again in the afterlife. Mike C

Awwww Elaine, I'm sorry I made you cry.  You had 3 Doberman Pinschers?  Wow.  When I was a kid I really, really, really wanted one.  I don't know why.  They looked so fierce and I think I felt I could go anywhere in town if I had a Doberman to protect me.  I later found out that any loyal dog becomes ferocious when their master's in danger.  What kind of dog is Murph? Do you have a picture?  Feel free to post one if you do!  of your Dobies as well.  I remember fondly the many pets I've had throughout my lifetime.

Jay - I'm going to be apologizing, it seems.  Sorry I got you too!  I really didn't mean to do that.  Please take a tissue and pass them around to the others.  But not before I take one for myself.  Coo-Coo was a beautiful dog.  Did you do the oil painting?  I wouldn't be the least surprised, with the beautiful graphics you do at the Codgers.  It's very nice!

Emmett - that's a sad story.  It must have been very difficult for all.  I have hopes of seeing all my beloved pets again one day...Princess, Mickey, Gufi, Coco, Cat, and little Pepper.  None of them knew each other here, but they all knew me and I'm hoping they're playing nice now as they await my arrival!  Thank you for stopping by my blog and commenting.

Ms Linda Davis!  You snuck in on me as I was chatting with Jay it seems =).  I need to write you and fill you in on the mailing I did.  I had so many laughs today from it.  Thank you for stopping by.  I respectfully request to give up my sugar award and become a sponge again.  I'm really not so sweet.  Just ask either of my kids.  =)

Maggie - What a sweet post. I am a newer pet owner, and have not had any pass yet, however, I have several friends that have lost their pets and this is a great idea to share.

Maggie:  This is a great post.  I just had a colleague lose a cat because the cat ate the easter lily leaves which are very toxic.  I will let her know about this site.  I also have several clients who work with rescue leagues -- one in particular helps place senior pets with seniors.  Thanks for the heads up -- this is great information.

I have a real estate friend who just recently lost her 13 year old dog followed by her 19 year old cat.  I will pass your post along to her.

I have a customer that rescues French Mastiffs, she has 4 of her own and usually has several extra rescues.

Cyndee - welcome to pet ownership!  Like kids, they are a lot of work.  But also like kids, they are very rewarding.  I don't put my hands down near Fifi or she'll lick them over and over again.  It's so funny how she can't get enough attention from us.

Joan - I had no idea that those leaves are toxic!  I knew about the poinsiettas.  Wow.  I'm so sorry.  She must be devastated.  Please give her my condolences.  I think placing pets with seniors is such a fabulous effort.  Both have so much love to give and they just naturally bring it out in each other.

Marchel - a double whammy?!  How terrible.  I think folks that get involved with dog rescue efforts are so wonderful!  if it were not for them so many of those poor animals would be put to sleep.  I preach responsible pet ownership - getting them fixed!  Our two cats were so angry with us when we took them in for their appointments.  But, oh well, they got over it.  =)

I am a huge animal lover Maggie - I now have 2 dogs, a cat and a double-yellow head Amazon parrot who drives me up the wall imitating telephone ring tones (the office, home, cell phones).  I will go check out the site... these pets mean so much to us and loosing one of them is like loosing a member of the family.

Ines - a woman after my own heart!  You're like me...giving the zoo a run for their money!  Have you seen the cockatoo at the show at metrozoo?   His name is Crash and he does all sorts of sounds, including the one that gave him his name...the sound of a bomb dropping and exploding.  It's a funny show.  We have 1 dog, 2 cats, an African parrot who loves to have his head scratched (I greet him in the morning and he comes over for kisses and head scratches), 1 guinea hen and I've lost track of Dad's chickens.  I think he has about 20 or so.  We don't eat them so they're pets =) And being so proliferous, every once in a while they have chicks and add to the bunch.  There's a big dog in the 'hood who comes by sometimes and kills our chickens.  Dad wants to kill him!  He just finished building a bigger coop for them in hopes of keeping them safe.  But the darn chickens like to go for walks so they'll fly the coop (he he) and stroll throughout the neighborhood and come back home at night.  I enjoy watching them.

We also had an iguana who ate none other thatn Arugula (snobby lizzard!) - and a beloved love-bird who I cry everytime I think of her....she would sit under my chin and purr.  I had chickens when I was a little girl also and would have fresh eggs every morning......that was pre-cholesterol days!

Ines - please don't laugh at me...I thought your iguana ate your pet lizard named Arugula.  Ummm, it must be way past my bedtime.  I then realized that it was the iguana eating the vegetable.  Oh my goodness I need to get some sleep!  I'm sorry about your love-bird.  She sounds darling.

Maggie, this is the sweetest post.  I know my old pets are waiting for me in heaven.  It wouldn't BE heaven if they weren't there, so I don't have a doubt about it at all.  They have personalities and souls just like we do.  And I have tears in my eyes thinking of the ones I miss.  Thanks for this.

And I've got to say that Lysa is just one of the sweetest people EVER.  She sent Tall One some whale pictures because she knows of her love of marine life.  Tall One TREASURES those photos.  Lysa, thanks again for encouraging her!!  (Lysa took these pictures herself!!  I'm amazed at her photography skills AND at her location, as a totally landlocked person, I don't often see whales.)  ;o)

Maggie, you've got me in tears. Thank you so much. I've got two beloved pets there at the Rainbow Bridge who I lost 1 month apart. Kapena Kai my 16 yr old kitty and Snoopie a pit bull rescue who was horribly abused. I lost them right after 9/11 and the Rainbow Bridge website kept me "sane".
Thank you again.

Sarah, Thank you also. I am so glad Tall One loves the photos. Our brokers grandson who just turned 5 (I think) call tell the difference between a humpback and a northern right faster then his parents. (one has a dorsal the other doesn't) I try to encourage any childs dreams if I can and Tall One's are easy since our passions are the same. It's not every day a whale comes to the office!

Midori, I only feed the fish and the turtles! The birds steal from them LOL. Thank you too! I wouldn't be happy at our office w/o you there either. You've really added a positive light there. I'm glad things turned out how they did.

Sarah - I agree with you 110% about Lysa.  And to think I may not "know" her if I hadn't stopped by her blog.  Or did she stop by mine first?  No matter, one of us read, commented and a friendship blossomed.  Isn't amazing at the wonderful opportunities we have in the Rain?  Please remember that you and Tall One (and the rest of your gang too) have had invitations to visit Florida and enjoy all it has to offer.  My offer still stands!

Lysa - I'm sorry about your pets.  That's always rough.  I'm sure you have wonderful memories of them.  You made me laugh with your other comment.  There's a place in the keys where folks pay a dollar to get out on a dock and feed the tarpon.  If you want a bucket of fish to feed them that's 2 bucks.  The tarpon are the size of loveseats!  Anyway, there's sea gulls and pelicans that hang out there and are always trying to steal fish.  That part is sometimes more entertaining than feeding the tarpon.  Those birds will go to great lengths to be fed!

I loved reading all the comments!

Rommel & BrandyMaggie - per your comment: Dobies are wonderful dogs, but not a breed for everyone. They're very intelligent and think they know more than their owners. They've been said to be the only breed that can 'reason'. I found that to be true. So the owner has to be strong enough to maintain the alpha dog image, otherwise the Dobie is fully willing to take control. Like any dog, they're not vicious unless they've been raised that way. They're extremely loyal and protective of their family, and their intelligence allows them to discern a situation as to whether their family is in danger or not. (This photo is an example of their alertness, as they were watching someone walking on a nearby street)

My first Dobie was Rommel (left in the photo). He was my soulmate. When he was 5, Brandy (right) joined us as a year-old. I volunteered with the humaneBrutie babe society, and that's where I met her. Both died of lymphoma within 6 months of each other.

My third Dobie was Brutus. I told him he was a wuss - he loved everybody and everything! Even the rabbits didn't run when he went out into the yard! He died at age 7 of cardiomyopathy - a common ailment in the breed.

The Murph is a mini long-haired doxie. He's on my AR profile page. He's more of a guard dog than Brutus ever was and would definitely think he could take on the Dobies. ;-)

Elaine - thank you for coming back and writing about your beautiful Dobies.  And for the pictures too.  I always did think they are beautiful animals.  I still do.  Based on what you're telling me, I now think I probably would not have made a good Dobie mistress as a child.  I would have probably let him have his way as far as leading the pack.  Your dogs were beautiful and regal.  And your Murph is super cute!  My Fifi's a little fleabag but we love her anyway.

Ines - I did!  Thanks.  Hopefully I can understand comments the first time around now that I've slept some =)
