The day has been filled with any number of chores and tasks including a project which I've been working on for a couple of days now and with which I'm still not finished. Yet it seemed time to take a break and to try something light hearted and totally unrelated to any of those responsibilites.

yellow roseWhile Shakespeare allowed Juliet to question the importance of a name, with his Rose by any other name line, I do think that a name has importance.

Shell Broadnax reminded me of this concept when she posted Gotta Love POOP all about a cute little kitty she has just rescued. She has asked for help in choosing a name for the new addition to her household.

I began to think of how much time we have taken and how many rejected suggestions we have made as we named our various pets over the years. Then I began to think of how many wonderful names of various businesses I've seen in the pages of ActiveRain as I perused the pages seeking information and insight.

We named our business rooms b.y. root because our last name is Root. And, because my first name which was also my Mom's name is Bonnie (I've never gone by Bonnie) and my middle name is Yvonne it has been fun using my initials to form the word by. Since I deal with rooms each day in my home staging business it simply made sense to include the word rooms.

I would love to hear why you named your business the way you did. Please join in the name calling fun and tell me the name of your business and why you named it the way you did. If you would like to, you may link your business name to your website when you leave your answer. Rose or no rose, how did you get your name?

rooms b.y. root is owned by Jack and Yvonne Root who happily stage homes in Prescott, Sedona, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Payson and in much of Northern Arizona. Would you like to have your home Dressed for Display? Give us a call today.

PS Tell us about your tag line too. And, let us know how long it took you to decide on your name and tag line.

OH Love this post!  My staging business is Equity Staging Partners with a tag line of Maximizing your equity by setting the stage.

I chose Equity Staging Partners because staging raises equity and by having other stagers team with you and i am big on team work partners fit in well.

Choosing a business name It is a lot of fun and very important because of all the marketing considerations.

Hey Shell, Good idea mentioning your tag line. I didn't even think about that and it is a good idea to include it. I love how your tag line fits in so well with your over all concept.

Our tag line is Dressing for Display. That comes from my days as a Visual Display Manager. It also fits in with the idea of Marketing a home. We all know that staging can and should be another piece of the marketing puzzle.

Neat post Yvonne!  My mothers name is Bonnie also!!   And my cousin is Robin Root!!!!  :)

My business is name is Turning Leaf.  I chose that that name because if seemed to cover the variety of my business activities. (nothing to do with the wine!)  Turning leaf means making a change for the better.  My main bread and butter job at the moment is house flipping with the staging and organizing coming up strong.  Both activities showcase "changing" real estate. I also redesign used furniture - again showcasing a "change". Now I am designing a line of fused glass jewelry and art work under Turning Leaf. Oh, and I just finished my fourth job as an event planner - I may have to think of another name for that business!

I chose Georgia Interior Solutions because I view my real estate staging as providing solutions to homeowners.  And.... I spent days coming up with it!   I agree, Shell - it was alot of fun!

Thanks Bonnie, oops, Yvonne (lol) for this fun post.

Deanne, Just look at all the name connections you and I have. We have allready discussed a few and here come a few more. We must have familys which really think alike, huh? My goodness girl, how do you find time to sleep? Do you have photos of your furniture and your jewelry? We would love to see all of your work under the Turning Leaf name. What a wonderfully descriptive choice. I love it.

Kathy, You are so correct -- a solution. It seems to me that the inclusion of your location in your name is good also. It is a great way to have instant recognition from the local community as well as the search engines. You've added another element it will be nice to see from others commenting -- how long did you take to decide your business name? I think I will add both Shell's idea of the tag line and your idea of how long it took to decide to the post.

Great post. It is fun to see how others have selected their names- Ours is kind of boring. Originally we were Katherine Hart Interiors but once we got into staging more and more I changed it to Hart & Associates Staging and Design. The reason I went with such a traditional name is that we do a lot of work with Real Estate Companies on a corporate level and I wanted to sound like we were a much bigger firm then we were at the time! (fake it til you make it) I also did not want to lose my name in the title.

Our tag line is "Prepare for a faster and more profitable sale" tm

In all of our advertising we use PREPARE in larger letters- I think it kinds of warns people that they need to action. kh

Yvonne, I like your name and tag.

My daughter and I work together and that is such a blessing to both of us to be able to do that.

We work with Evolve Realty Group and we call ourselves (of course) the Mother and Daughter Realty Team. My broker suggested that we put MAD under our tag (sort of like a sub tag) but we opted to not do that because there is a name out there like that it is a good cause and we don't want to interfer with that in anyway. MADD.

So in the office we are referred to as MAD and sometimes I response by saying "yeah I am MAD as hell" that I have no sales to report.  get a chuckle or two.

I am right now looking for tips and hopefully find a video on staging for those customers you just want to be settle and let them view it in the quiet of their own time and space and not jump up and say -- we need staging here and right now!

Do you have any videos laying around you can share?

I have always been creative... even called "weird" once when I was a child.  My thinking has always been way to the right brain and many times out of the box.  I chose my name because I have tried to encorporate the essence art and creativity into everything that I do... so it has been a journey for me.  My first Blog talks a little about how it all started with fly fishing.  "Artful Journey" started as decorative items for you to wear and for your home such as decorative soaps, jewelry, wall art, pottery, and paintings.  Then in 2002 I was hit by a car as a pedestrian... the car won :(... I ended up losing some fine motor in my right hand and couldn't continue to do my art that I loved....   I started designing and Staging my friend's homes for them and so started "Artful Journey Designs and Staging".  I can paint again now, but no fine pencil... oh well, one door closed and another opened... I will continue my journey ;)

Thank you for sharing that, Yvonne.  It was obvious to me why you chose "Root", but I had wondered about the "b.y." (as opposed to simply "by").  Now of course it makes perfect sense.

A while ago, I had written a Blog entry about my business name and the "ladybug" in my logo so I thought I'd share it again here for those that missed it.

http://activerain.com/blogsview/71926/The-Ladybug

And my tag line is "redesigning your world ... one room at a time".  It really only took me a few days to decide on both the business name and tag line, and never have I wished it were something else.

Hi Yvonne - I love yellow roses!!!! Anyway, my biz name is Third Eye Home Staging.  The reason for this is, that as a stager, I am the objective eye.  The "third eye" is also the mind's eye.

There is the home seller, the realtor, and then me, the objective, "third eye".

Hi All,

My Biz is named "Decorating Flavor" because the original plan was to start only a decorating business.  The flavor signifies my particular decorating "taste" which leans towards contemporary.

Once I decided to add Staging to my business, I added our tagline "Setting the Stage for a Beautiful Home".

We actually had all of our relatives submit entries for a tagline contest (with a $50.00) prize.  The results were a combination of a few entries so we just had a BBQ for everyone instead :)  It was really alot of fun!  I've always tried to get input from my family on everything from my letterhead design to Thank You cards. The teenagers are especially quick to tell me if something is "too corny" or if something "looks cool". They are my biggest critics!

I wanted something completely creative and innovative.

Yea that didn't work out - my company is called Rockland Home Staging.  Rockland is the county I live in.  In the end I decided that since home staging is still almost unknown I didn't want to confuse people.  My company name is what it is. Home Staging in Rockland County.

For my company name, I choose House Appeal. After days of brainstorming, I came up with the name after Curb Appeal off of HGTV and just changed it to fit my business instead!  I offer services from staging to redesign to painting faux finishes and kid's murals so I needed something that would "appeal" to all of those areas:)  My tag line is "Transform Your Home Today".  Hopefully it plants a thought in someones head that their home needs a transformation and quickly!!

Kate, It is fun to see the evolution in your business name. The PREPARE is a fantastic idea. As in everything in our lives we must be prepared to take action. Reminding our clients and potential clients of that fact in a subtle yet huge no-nonsense way is wonderful. Great warning.

Rosemary, What a wonderful way to share the fact that you are a team which works to provide the best for your clients. You were right to leave the MADD name alone. I did take a look at your site and it looks like you guys did a wonderful job of putting it together. I love your signature with the roses. Perfect. I peeked at the number of home stagers who are members of AR and are in the California market. There were 126 listed. I will send you an e-mail with some suggestions about connecting with a few of them. Rosemary, I'm so glad you see the beauty of Lori Kim's life as a blessing for her and for us.

Lori Kim, What a fantastic story you tell. You are so right about finding different doors when one is closed for you. And, how blessed we are to have you join us. I love movies like The Butterfly Effect and how they make us think about how life has so many twists and turns. And, Lori Kim your choice for a business name couldn't have been better. I'm so glad your journey took you to a place where I could get to know you, if only in part.

Sandi, I remember your blog and how much I liked the idea of the ladybug. It seems so many of us appreciate the qualities of ladybugs. You have made a wise choice. And, of course your tag line incorporating "world" ... and "one room at a time" is brilliant. I think it is wonderful when we can "never regret" a choice we have made. You go girl.

Maureen, Yes, yellow roses are so beautiful, aren't they? You are so right, the real estate agent and the seller need you to be the Third Eye. You are the key to the whole team. Good choice.

Eva, Decorating Flavor....How cool. Again there is an evolution in the naming. I really like that. It is so good that you could stick with the original name and then evolve with the tag line. Good thinking. Your idea for the contest and then ending up with everyone the winner is top class. You are so right about the teens having a keen sense concerning what is corny and what is right on. Family is truly priceless.

I tossed around a lot of names for quite awhile until I came up with UpStage Home ReDesign because I wanted to offer both staging and redesign services and I want clients to UpStage their competition.  I haven't yet been able to commit to one of the two tag lines: Get Ready to Sell  or The Landscape of Selling Real Estate is Changing.

Hi Yvonne, I chose STAGE it RIGHT! because i wanted something with a theatrical sound, as we all know  to produce a stage play or movie someone has to come up with the set design and then implement it.

P.S. Have you ever heard of the artist Dale Nichols, who settled and died in Sedona?

Maureen, I wanted something completely creative and innovative.  You are so funny. You are also right. It is a good idea to have the words home staging and the name of your location in your name. Think SEO. Think simple. Think Right On!

Kari, With all you have to offer, it seems you couldn't have come up with a more Appealing name. :) Your tag line with a call for action is perfect. Way to go!

Tina, Half the fun is tossing it around for a while. And, in this case Upstaging is a GOOD idea! If I get a vote on your tag line it is Get Ready to Sell. I love the message and I like the crispness of it. Excellent ideas.

Terry, If Tina Upstages you then just STAGE it RIGHT! Your thoughts concerning how you decided on your name are so fascinating. They, of course, make so much sense. As to the artist -- nope, I'm sorry I don't know Dale Nichols. Is this someone you are related to?

Marie, The Added Touch Home Staging certainly grabs attention. Who doesn't need an added touch? Then Beautifully Staged Homes to Sell completes the message. Good thinking.

Penny, The way you thought out your business name is so interesting. Good thinking. Being first in the phone book is definitely a plus. Allowing folks to know right from the get-go where you do business is important for the web. I used to say I was a home stylist when people asked me what I do. I gave it up when often they asked how much I charged to go to someone's home and fix their hair. :) Your tag line is also a good way to let people know we don't go in and begin the TV version of destroying their ego and their feelings by telling them they don't have any sense. I love your photo, Penny. I'm glad you came out of the shadows.

I am looking to update my resources, are there any California stagers in the San Joaquin / Stanislaus area that would like to get me their information so I have it on hand when and if I need it.

Of course not every seller is willing to put out the bucks, they just want to know what they are getting and some are so proud of their home just the way it is that calling in a specialist with another voice might be just what is needed with some listings.

Thanks

Happy Monday!

Rosemary, One of the things we try to remind sellers of is the fact they are selling their home, not the items in it. When you find a good home stager in your area he or she will be able to help your sellers understand all the good part about pre-packing and the like. I have sent you an e-mail and hope the information there will be helpful. Did I tell you your daughter is beautiful? Well she is! Happy Monday back at you!

Great post Yvonne!

I picked Ambiance Staging in one afternoon by looking in the Thesaurus.  I wanted it to be short and simple, easy to remember.  I wanted the word 'staging' to be in the title.  I preferred to have something towards the beginning of the alphabet.  I thought that by using the word 'Ambiance' it would sound more European, and since I lived in Europe for 5 years I wanted to incorporate a bit of European flaire!  I also wanted to target a higher end market and so that influenced my choice.

I also wanted a name where the url wasn't taken.  So it had to be available.  Also when thinking about urls, the name needs to be short enough, easy to remember, and matching your business name. When I searched www.ambiancestaging.com it was taken, but I found that www.ambiance-staging.com wasn'tza, so that made my decision for me.  I actually prefer it with the dash, it makes it easier to read.

My TAGLINE is:  "Creating and Ambiance that sets your home apart" (came up with that the same afternoon as well) and what I love about my tagline is that the way my logo is the "apart" is spaced apart from the rest of the tagline and nested in the text above; it's subtle but I love it.

home staging boulder county

The hard thing was choosing a logo and marketing set that I liked.  The above was my 3rd try, and I did all the work myself on Illustrator. Here was my first try:

home staging boulder

I like the idea of candles, lighting as it related to Ambiance, but I decided to go for a more simple graphic that would print well in B/W and also, though I love the type font, it was too difficult to read.

With my second try I wanted to incorporate some of the Feng Shui element in the logo, you know East meets west, an I had wanted to have some representation of a house in the logo:

home staging boulder colorado

But t was too schitzo for me, it didn't flow and lacked cohesion. Plus again the typeset (called Ambiance!) was too hard to read.

3rd time lucky eh?  I LOVE my logo and tagline.  The only thing that I've changed is that I now tend to adverstise myself as Ambiance-Staging to re-inforce the web url, an I also think it gives my company name a more modern twist.

Was that long enough for you?  lol!

Hello everyone with great names...

I thought that we all love to be received at a fabulous front door each and every time we come home.  And if we are to make buyers feel right at home, it,  too, should start at the front door.

ALSO, when I incorporate Re-Design and Event/Holiday Staging into my portfolio, I use the tagline "Don't look further than your own front door!"  I am trying to capture the market here in CT that wishes to Stage and Re-Design on (basically) no budget.  Looking no further than your own front door means using what you have at its best.  And boy, is it working!  Thanks for putting this idea out there Yvonne!

I had quite a time coming up with a business name - everything I thought was brilliant and original was already being used. My favorite was Design Intervention which was already registered by a lady with a knitting company in Sun City, AZ! I had visions of her knitting covers for hymn books.

I finally came up with Dressing Rooms (House Dressing was already taken!) and it is growing on me. Still working on a tag line. I could try 'dog house to dream house' but with my luck someone is already using it. Just kidding!

By the way - this is my first post on AR. Glad I found you'all.

This is fun to see everyone's thought process!  When I first started in CA I had a partner and our business was named SpaceLift with the tag line "A Face Lift for Your Home" (seemed to fit the SoCal mentality with all that plastic surgery!)  When I moved and was starting up again, everthing I came up with sounded familiar or used in some fashion before.  Now, I'm just boring and go by my name  Judy Heinrich Home Staging  I always thought I'd do some nice logo or font with my name and I never even did that!  Maybe someday... Very interesting post. I decided to use my own given name Nicola Lindsay ReDesign & Home Staging. My nickname is Nikki but there is another gal , a teenager, here by the same name so I had to make it stand out. My Logo was given me by a good friend and it is a lotus flower. The lotus comes up from the swamp and mud to become a beautiful flower. I had had cancer for three years and while not able to do much I watched tv alot. I was enthralled with the staging and redesign shows. When my Dr gave me the all clear, I told him I was going to re-invent myself. He loves to hear of my venture when I return for check-ups. My quote I use is "A beautiful Home from what you Own" . I am new in the business but love each project I am asked to do.

Hi Yvonne,

This is my first time on an Active Rain blog!  My company name is Decor By You and my tag line is "All you need is a nudge..."  Interior decorating and redesign are often confused and as an IRIS redesigner I wanted to come up with something that represented using what people already have.  I have since added staging to my business but I think it still works because often you can stage a home using mostly their own things.

I am so enjoying looking through all of these posts!

What a great post!  Love everyone's stories.  Our name is Rediscovered Interiors, and the tag line is Rediscover your home's potential .....whether your selling or staying.   We specialize, like most of you out there, in staging and redesign, so wanted to make reference to both.

I liked the "Rediscover" part too, since I have for several years made and sold in a local shop decorative home pieces using old (usually more than 100 years old) parts of architectural pieces salvaged from old farm homes.  I almost always incorporate old doorknobs.  My favorite knobs are ones you find with the old yarn still tied around the underneath side of the knob, probably from someone pulling a tooth from a long time ago.  So, I have always "rediscovered" uses for old parts of homes into new unique uses.

My partner and I came across our name after a good bottle of wine and a Southern Living catalog.  Great ideas can come from the oddest places.  One of my best Realtor presentation speeches I wrote was in the McDonald's playroom while letting my youngest get rid of some energy while I was having an "ah-ha!" moment!  Well, our business is very new, but I absolutely enjoy this blog site and everyone's knowledge and willingness to share.    A lot of  you out there may not realize it, but you really help inspire us "newbies."

Yvoone - I love this post. . .saw it a few days ago, but just sat down to read ALL the comments.  Fabulous stories here.

My company is One Savvy Move. . .I love phrases with double meanings.  My clients are savvy to hire us. . .and one savvy move of furniture and accessories can change the look and feel of a room. . .and eventually I might open a real estate brokerage with the same name. . . one savvy move as in from one house to another!  OK, so maybe I love phrases with more than double meanings! (Did any of that make sense?!?  I have the nuances of meaning stored in my head, but have never put it in print before!)

Tag line - "Gain Instant Appreciation For Your Home."  Again, appreciation as in seeing your home in a new light and appreciation as in added value i.e. additional $$$$ when selling!

Yvonne, I have bookmarked the post because I think it will go on and on and I like hearing the logic behind the name.  It was creative to come up with this subject.  By the way, I vote and rank this a 5.

Lori, Double (and triple) meanings are so much fun. You are savvy to have chosen such a fun name. It will move well with you into your brokerage. It is also a great way to move into a conversation concerning what you do when others ask about the name. And, just think, I appreciate having you added to the list of fun names and stories people have provided. Thanks.

Rosemary, Thank you so much for the 5 ranking. Wow, that is so cool. Yes, it will be fun to see if others find this post and add their personal answers to this question. I love to hear other people's stories.

One Savvy Move - that is a great name!!!  I love it.

My company is Showcase Your Space, and our tag line is PREP your Property to Sell Well.

When we started, hardly anyone knew the word staging, and when we mentioned it to people, they had no idea what it might mean.  so we weren't focused on using it in our name.  We wanted a name that somehow did describe what we did, at least gave a hint of it, and we knew we needed a tag line to continue explaining ourselves.  Can't remember what else figured into it exactly; it was April 2004.  After we settled on the name, I realized that SYS, our business "initials", are my brother's initials, so somehow that felt "right" too.

Deborah, I agree with you. Savvy Moves make more sense. :) What a great idea to explain staging with the name and tag line of your business. What else could one ask? You Showcase your business and PREP your customers to know what you are about. Great Work!

When we started our own office (the same day we bought a house- NEVER again on the same day) we had to decide quickly. We wanted L&L Realty because we are Les and Leslie Prest, we had a sign design already planned as we had been thinking about this awhile. We were going to use a block L and a script L. We had a dispute with our Broker and decided to go all of a sudden. When we talked to the Dept. of RE, L&L was already taken so we just went with our name. Boring. Oh, well. We picked colors that no other office in town used, our tag line is a variation of a line that my husband used for years in a different business: "Want the Best, call a Prest". He once placed an ad in the Yuma paper for Plumbing, and the ad person "accidently" left out the plumbing part, so the ad just read "Want the Best, call Les Prest" and his phone#. Boy, did he get some calls!

Our web sites are http://www.PrestRealty.com for rentals, and http://www.PaysonAZHomesforSale.com for sales.

ANd yes, Yvonne, I got your "memme'd" notice. I'll get on it soon.

Leslie, I can't give good attention to your business name. I'm too busy laughing about your plumbing ad story. You may be in trouble if my loud mouth awakens the granddaughter. Thanks for giving me a laugh out loud moment today. I had just been chuckling up to that point. I hope I get to meet you soon.

Staged.Results. is just that, if you stage you get results.... My tag line is Staging life for better living....I also do a lot of redesigns and thought the tag line should include all of my clients.....On marketing materials my tag line differs. When I'm targeting those for staging to sell the tag is

 "experience the rewards......Staged.Results"

Hi Monica, What seems so cool to me is the punctuation. Staged (period) Results (period) Very slick name! I also like your tag lines. They make sense! Thanks for stopping in.
