You've probably seen the email.  You know, the one that encourages everyone to wear red on Fridays to show support for the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.  I don't see much red on Fridays and I have to admit I don't always remember, either.  But I do unconditionally and completely support and admire everyone who wears, or hasWWI Soldier worn, a uniform in the U.S. Military.

My Grandfather, my Father, and every one of my uncles served in war time - Granddad in WWI and the others in WWII.  Our family was so incredibly lucky that they all returned home safe, because they were all in harms way with an enemy shooting real bullets and intent on killing them.

Maybe my family history is one reason it makes my blood boil every time I see anyone who disrespects a soldier or what they do.  Those warriors have a terrible, dangerous job to do but they are only following orders - orders that come from the top, by the way.  So let's not fault them for doing what we ask of them - what some go to great lengths to avoid doing (like moving to Canada).

My Dad, Uncle, and Grandfather

I hate war!  We should all hate war.  Our soldiers probably hate it more even than those of us who remain safe at home.  But, hating war will not stop it.  As long as there are evil people in this world, war will be a fact of life and we had better have a strong, capable, and willing military to protect us from those who would do us harm.

So, from the bottom of my heart -

to all of you who serve or have served,

or have family helping to protect our great country and all we stand for - -

"Thank You for Your Service to Your Country!"

Please repeat this message to every soldier you see.

Or even better, send those guys something as suggested by Vince Puelo.

(Top right - my grandfather/WWI.  Left - my grandfather with my dad and uncle/WWII)

Wonderful post Mike! I am also from a proud military family; Dad, Grandpa, Greatgrandpa, 2 uncles and more if you start looking at the genealogy!  Anything patriotic brings me to tears in a heartbeat...impossible to get through the Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful without tears. And don't even get me started on video of the guys coming home - all memories of when my Dad would return after 6-9 months at sea. Thank you for sharing the photos of your proud family.

Mike, thanks for sharing this, I will send to my team. I mentioned it on Tuesday at our company meeting because we are preparing a Red Day for KW in May to raise funds and can goods for the homeless.

No one had heard of Red Day for our Troops.

Keep getting the word out.

I love looking at the photos.

Debi, thanks you for that obviously heartfelt comment and tell your family members who served, "Thank you for your service to your country", from me.

Missy, I agree we need to keep repeating this until it's heard by enough people to make a difference.  Good luck with your Red Day!

One of the best things we can do for our overseas military personnel is to send care packages with pogie bait, magazines, letherman knives, and whatever they ask for. Include a personal note with each package. Many would contribute if given an address. Your local National Guard armory can provide addresses.

Mike, what a wonderful post. Came right out of nowhere for me, and made me think, as I should. Thank you. I have not heard of red day myself, so I am out of the loop. I will do that now that I know.

Just a quick question, what is pogie bait? I think I have to google it.

Andrea, thanks for reading my posts - I sure appreciate it.

As for "pogie bait" - I have no idea.  Guess I'd better check on that one, too.  :-)

I hope your calf is doing better,

Mike

Hi Mike!
I hadn't heard of Red Friday...but I know now! Thanks!  And thank you for reminding us to give respect to those who put their life on the line for us.

Mike I hadnt heard of Red Fridays, sounds like an idea that would make us feel all warm and fuzzy.  However, how bout getting involved with some of the volunteer groups that support veterans, or sending packages to those deployed?  Us wearing red on Friday can't be seen by those far away, but our actions can be felt.  I too come from a military family, and we also were lucky not to lose any family members.

Paula - those men and women deserve more than we can ever repay them.

Terry - You are absolutely right and please thank them for me for serving their country.  Vince suggested doing this, also.

Tony and Darcy - Those men and women get little more than our appreciation and support so we need to be lavish with that.
