American Idol Training for Realtors

By
Real Estate Agent with Sutton Group West Coast Realty

I've been a long time fan of American Idol since it first aired. Not being able to carry a tune in a bucket I am taken back how many people can sing not just well but have great voices. The talent pool is immense but just like Real Estate talent is not all it takes to succeed or become great.

AI winners are usually the ones who are able to take the criticism handed out by the judges and use that to propel them forward in the competition. The competitors who retaliate against the judges don't long last in the completion.  Realtors who can't handle the criticism of their team leaders, managers and clients struggle to survive. Great Realtors use the criticism to build great careers.

AI competitors who insist on "doing in my way", with a couple of exceptions (Chris Daughtry) don't do well on the show. Their insistence on "being me" stands in the way of satisfying the audience and they are eliminated. Successful Realtors are able set their needs aside to satisfy the needs of their clients while remaining within their definition of integrity.

AI winners are accountable for their experience in the competition. Losers, particularly in the early rounds, are continuing blaming someone or something else when they fail. The great Realtors I know own what happens to them.

The best part for me is seeing what the people who did not become the "American Idol" do with their lives after the competition. Although they do not win the competition they have learned about the business, about themselves and used that information to develop outstanding lives and careers.

Jennifer Hudson aside the AI "non-winner" I admire is Kellie Pickler. Continually criticised on the show for her singing and in the media for her back country ignorance, she did not know what a calamari is, has built a great career.

I think there is another similarity between Keller Pickler and really successful Realtors. Keller Pickler reveals herself as a very real person. There doesn't seem to be any pretentiousness about her. I see this trait in a lot of very successful Realtors I've worked with over the years.

Likeability is such a major asset in AI and in our business. You can have all the talent and education in the world but if the public just doesn't like you ... you aren't going to have much success.

So! Who do you think is going to win AI this year?

I love the energy and freshness of Allison Iraheta but can she knock off Adam Lambert and Danny Gokey?

Bob,

Good analogy between successful agents and contestants on AI. I've only watched a few times though.
