Radon Gas!  Very Dangerous and Underrated!  Please Call Your Local Radon Expert and Learn More About It.  Just Look At The Name, RADon-RADiation.

I went to meet a radon specialist at a home that one of my clients has under contract this morning.  Most of my clients choose not to do a radon inspection (I am guilty of this also. I have never had one done on my home).  The inspector was telling me that back when Reagan was the president, he ordered a mandate to HUD to include a radon inspection with every home.  Why do you think he did this?  Because it can kill you!  This mandate was never followed and there is now an investigation into why not.  He was telling me that 66% of Virginians live in hazardous levels of radon.

Radon reads in numbers.  I think it is the percentage of the air.  Living in a home with a reading level of 5, (5% of the air I think) is equal to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for the same amount of time.  I am not sure how accurate my numbers are.  I will admit that I need to learn more on this, I am just passing it along so you will do the same.

This is just what I heard.  I am no expert and I need to learn more about it.

I have only had one buyer ever do a radon test.  It was high and they at to put in a system to help lower the levels, so good reminder.

I don't know if we can even get a radon test done here in Hawaii. The again, if there's money to be made...

Nate:  We don't have alot of radon issues here but, the fact that there are even a few, makes you feel the need to be extremely diligent for your buyers where radon is concerned.  Dana Reeve (Christopher Reeve's wife) died of lung cancer and had never smoked in her life--I have read that it is felt that the radon was the cause--of course she lived in the Rockies for a very long time, where this gas is prevalent--but, it should alert one to be cautious nonetheless!

The number has to do with pico curies per liter of air.  I always tell clients that, while 4 is the number that is used to suggest the radon should be remediated, no 'safe' level has been established.  I like how you pointed out the relationship to radiation. I used to work at a nuclear power plant, so learned about the effects of radiation, and when I realized that the Rocky Mountains where I live are largely granite, and granite contains uranium, it all clicked.

Nate, I have a CO2 detector in my house, I think you can get an automatic radon detector too.
