THIS OLD HOUSE OF MINE
There's a great surge of building wherever you go
Up and down all the highways new homes seem to grow
There are small ones and large ones, some costly and fine
While I continue to live in this old house of mine.
I'd like a nice kitchen with windows so wide
That I could see all the things that I love so outside,
The trees and the grass and the clothes on the line,
And Dad's flowers next to this old house of mine.
I'd like nice new cupboards with shelves all inside
To store all the groceries and dishes to hide;
But I'll paint my old cabinet of ancient design
For it fits to a tee this old house of mine.
My house isn't beautiful, no not at all;
It's not large and spacious and not very tall;
But it's home and I love it more deeply with time --
It's a haven of rest, this old house of mine.
This place holds such memories of a family that's grown,
A son and four daughters that made this house home,
Of joys and of sorrows that increase with time
And make still more precious, this old house of mine.
But I'm planning a new house, complete every way,
And I talk with the architect day after day,
And I hope when I view that new structure so fine
It will look a wee bit like this old house of mine.
Gladys 1955
My grandma wrote this poem about her home in 1955. She was born in 1901 and died in 1995. She lived in this home for over 70 years. Grandpa died in 1960 a few years before I was born. He built the home before he met and married my grandma. He was born in the 1800's. In original part of the home - we found newpapers in the wall dated 1896, the kitchen and bathroom were added on later. My dad grew up in this house and still lives next door. The cabinet that she speaks of is still in the home, and is definitely of "ancient design". Part of it (the drawers for sure) are made of beer boxes! I will take pictures of the cabinet when we remove it, as my daughter now lives in this old house, and she would like nice new cupboards with shelves all inside.......
