SST Speechless Sunday( w/ text) Jade Surprise!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams

This is my 25 year old Jade plant. It has finally bloomed! I've waited all these years, not really expecting a bloom at all, let alone a multitude of them. The blooms appeared in the coldest stretch of winter while the earth was blanketed with snow. They lasted for many weeks.

jade plant, first blooms

blooming jade plant This is a photo of the plant with its sweeping branches. It is about 32" tall. I'm not sure how I will manage to repot it this spring but after the floral display it deserves a bigger pot! The branches are rather delicate so that makes it a two person job.

Wow Marian! That is a big plant and a beautiful one too. Sounds like it bloomed at just the right time!

Jackie,  I had been resigned to just having a nice, green jade plant forever. It was a delightful surprise! Thanks!         Debi, It is, indeed a gift and it purifies the air as a bonus!

Hi Toula, Yes, it is large that will make it a lot harder to protect as I'm transplanting it into a new & bigger pot! The branches & leaves are quite delicate.

Jade plants bloom best when they are under stress. Since you get a good amount of rain there, protect it from the rainfall and don't give it any water until the leaves start to shrivel. You can even let them shrivel quite a bit. Then water them, and overnight the leaves will be plump again. Don't water it again until the leaves shrivel again. If you keep doing that, you should have quite a few flowers on it this time of year.

Our jade plants around here bloom profusely because all they get is the ten inches of rain that falls naturally from the sky. Here's one about six feet tall from an inspection a couple of weeks ago:

I came back to add some after reading the comments. I had what I thought was a huge jade plant when I lived in Texas. I watered it and it grew. When I got to San Diego and saw these plants that are up to ten feet tall, and blooming, I had to find out what was going on.

I've been a gardener all my life, and one of the things I like most about San Diego is that anything will grow here if we meet its water needs. In doing that, I've also discovered many, many things that bloom that I never knew bloomed.

It is amazing it got so big in that little pot.  It's pretty though.  Best of luck in repotting it.  I have a shamrock I've had since I was 17 ... and that was a little more than 25 years ago. :)

I never knew Jade plants bloomed!  I am the daughter of a florist mother, and a very green thumbed father, and have worked in several different flower shops myself!  So pretty!  I really had no idea....

I know lots of people love jade plants, but they are just too common around here, and any leaves that fall off root and become another plant. They are almost weedy.
