BRAVO TO OUR LOCAL VOLUNTEER FIREMEN

It has been a busy week at church this week culminating at Easter Mass this morning.  It was a lovely service till about the communion part of the mass. An elderly lady, could be on her eighties, sitting four rows in front of us had a fainting spell.  I didn't realize it till I saw a lady went to the back and brought a glass of water, then two ushers kept on coming back and forth.  Then I realized something was wrong.  I saw a lady holding tight an elderly lady close to her.

Then I heard the fire siren.  Our church is four blocks from the Fire Dept.  Within five minutes, two firemen came with their emergency medical box and one of the firemen had a stethoscope checking her breathing.  This was right on the center isle while the parishioners were all lined up for communion.  Then four firemen tried to lie down the lady on the pew and hooked her up to an oxygen tank.  Then as soon as the last communicants piled up, the gurney came up the center aisle.  The lady was so feisty.  She kept on asking where she was going and saying "I don't want to go to the hospital."  She was barely audible since she was hooked up to the oxygen tank.  Then they put her on the gurney and she was out of the church as the priest was saying the Final Blessing.  By the time we sang the Recessional Hymn she was out of the church and into an ambulance to the hospital.

The firemen did a fantastic job quietly without disrupting so much of the Easter Mass.  The people at the back of the church did not know what was going on until the gurney came up.  The firemen showed a total respect and reverence for the celebration of the Easter Mass.   We are so proud of our local volunteer firemen for their quick response and efficiency.  They are a great asset to our community.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!

Hi Rosalinda. We have a volunteer fire brigade out where I live in the country as well.

It's surprising who takes on that role. When I was working in education I noticed that David Fiox, one of our Superintendents (think one of the top four or five decisions makers in board with about 18000 students and 55 schools) was wearing a pager and that he was getting pages from his local fire department. He told me that he had been a volunteer for many years and that, though he couldn't always go, he did whenever he could to help out. There were times when he would show up for work and he might seem a little tired. Then I would find out that he had been out most of the night fighting a fire. He also had to deal with those times when there was a loss of life. I can't think of anyone better suited for the role he had in our system.

Bob - Isn't it wonderful to have such dedicated firemen in our community?  The fact that in my town, they are all volunteers and they are there within minutes when you need help.  We have three firemen on my street.  They all live across my home, the fire chief and two others.

Hey Rosalinda,

This is a great story.  Too many people take them for granted until they need them themselves, but when called upon, you find out how truly special these people are.  Thank you for the nice post!

Khash - They are truly special.  Last year, I had an emergency at home when my husband had taken ill.  He was bleeding profusely from his nose.  I called the emergency # and they were at my house in no time.  The EMT men were able to stop the bleeding and took him to the hospital.  Tnen ten days later it happened again.  So I called the Fire Dept. again and again they came and did the same thing.  My husband is okay now and I was so grateful to these guys.
