Why do you do what you do?

Do you do what you do everyday for the money? Some of us probably do, and there isn't anything wrong with that. After all we do have to put food on the table and pay the bills. But many of us in the real estate field or any other field for that matter, do what we do for other reasons.

Most of my life I've been accused of mothering people, being the constant girl scout, being a goody two shoes. I'm OK with all of that. Doing what's right in my mind isn't a decision making process. In my mind doing what is right is just what you do with out thinking about it.

Last weekend my little sister (yes we really are sisters) graduated college at the top of her class, with national honors and PFK. Paula is an American Sign Language interpreter. Paula does what she does because her heart is in the right place. Not so long ago the doctors didn't expect Paula to live, and if she did she would be severally impaired. Long story short, after 2 years of being unable to speak she is healthy today. Paula can speak in a manner most of us understand. But now she can speak for those you can't speak for themselves in an audible tone.

Last weekend was also Paulas birthday, mothers day and her husband left for Iraq. As you might imagine all of this is emotionally draining. But Paula is doing what she thinks is right. So, again, I ask all of you. Why do you do what you do?

Very good story that hits home. I just like what I do. Real Estate is just a natural now that I have learned the trade and its something you keep learning. The money is nice, meeting new people weekly is nice , being your own boss is great, being President and trash man at the same time makes you think. My daughter works for Special Olympics and its not for the money.

Well, I do what I do for maybe 3 or 4 reasons.  I like inspecting homes, there's always something new, it's fun to see how people make a house into a home.  Second, it's helpful, there are many people who don't know much about how a house is put together, and how you have to keep it together, so I get to educate them, and I get to join in the excitement of someone buying their very first home.  Third, it's good to be challenged, and running and marketing a business is a big challenge for me since I'm not trained as a businessman.  Fourth, I get to meet new people all the time, and I even get along with with most of them!  Fifth, I get to be creative, in how I present the inspection report so that it's balanced, in how I run my business to stay ahead of the competition, to always have something new cooking on the back burner.

Oh, that's 5 reasons . . . Anyway Dena is right when she keeps talking about doing the right thing.  I strongly believe I'm doing the right thing, and there's some great satisfaction when my clients tell me so!

Dena, my congratulations to Paula for graduating college at the top of her class, but more importantly for her victory in lifel

Well I could come up with reasons for why I do what I do, but I think you said it best by saying "doing what is right is just what you do with out thinking about it"

Dena - please give your sister a big CONGRATULATIONS HUG from me, although she doesn't know me.  She does sound like an incredible human being and I guess the "kind and giving gene" runs in your family,no?

Paula obviously makes a huge difference in other people's lives, just like you. I do what I do because I too want to make a difference. I want to leave this world a better place than I found it. I hope I'm working in that direction one person at a time.

Dena ~ you and Paula must come from very good stock!  I love the way Paula has turned her situation into a tall pitcher of lemonade... using her ears to help those who can't hear.

Congratulations to you both and to your parents!
