I bought a new Laptop. I bought an HP online and I have 21 days from delivery to return it. I had been looking at them online, as well as I went to Office Depot and Staples to "see" the models I was thinking about. I did quite a bit of research as I was looking at Toshiba and HP. It took me about 3 months to make a desicion.
I have had 2 Toshiba's and have really liked both of them. Both lasted a Long time, both performed, in my opinion VERY well. I upgraded both to the limit through the years. I still have my first Toshiba that I bought in 1997. It is a "Satellite" however I don't know the exact model number. It is thick, the processor very slow. I think the total amount of space is around 1G. I have upgraded the memory to its limit of 512k. It just got "old" and wasn't capable of running alot of different types of software. The screen is smaller, probably about 10" with very little resolution compared to today's models.
My second Toshiba I still have as well, I think I bought it around 2001. Screen is still very good 15". But once again, I have upgraded the computer to it's limit. It holds I think around 20G. I have replaced the hard drive once as it completely locked up and went to blue screen, could not be repaired. I currently have it docked at home with a Dyna Dock (made by Toshiba) which works fantastic. If you have a laptop that you want to use at home with your larger screen and printers etc. get the Dyna Dock. With just one cord it is connected to a 21" Samsung Flat Screen Monitor, 2 HP printers, Card Reader, Wireless Keyboard, and Wireless mouse. The complete system works great, most of the time. It locks up way more than it should as the speed of the processor and the amount of RAM simply can't keep pace with multi-tasking. I usually have many "things" running at once. I have the system set up so that I am using the laptop screen as well in a Dual Monitor setup. I move "windows" from the main screen, Samsung, to the secondary screen, the laptop. I will work on one and while I am waiting for it to catch up will move to another program to continue what I was doing there, and then back and forth. This works fine for a while, then it just can't handle it. Everything locks up, I have to perform a restart, wait for everything to come back online so I can get back to what I was working on. Very Frustrating.
I also have a Gateway "convertible" Tablet. I bought this computer around 2005. This is the type were you pivot the screen and the screen lays flat on top of the keyboard to resemble a Tablet. You then push a button to make the image turn 90 degrees to the viewing that you want. Located in a hole in the bottom of the computer is a Stylus. With the slide of a button on the bottom of the computer the Stylus pops out into your hand. You use this stylus to "write" onto the screen of the laptop. By sending your document to the "Journal" software you can then write on any document using the Stylus and print the document as you normally would. It really is pretty cool and does work well. This is not a light computer, but the way that the battery is shaped makes for a great "Handle". The computer has 50G which is fine with me as I use an Iomega 350G external backup system.
I just received the HP dt7v or something like that. It was delivered last Wednesday. It is a GREAT looking laptop. It is a large system. Plenty of viewing surface and because the monitor is so big, the keyboard is full size with the numerical keypad on the right side just like a normal keyboard. The screen is very vibrant and the sound that comes out of the plastic case sounds like an orchestra. Speed is good, dual core with 2.3 m processor and 4g of RAM, this system, I'm sure, can handle anything I would throw at it. Here's my problem, I was wrong. I thought my Toshiba and Gateway were maxed out in the RAM department, but I was wrong. I have found additional RAM that I can add to the Gateway ($36.00 takes it up to 2G) which will probably solve that problem. I have found additional memory for the Toshiba as well. Do I add the another computer to my collection and simply keep the New computer since I already have it and have "spent" the money. Or do I send it back, invest another $75.00 total to upgrade both older computers and save approximately $970.00 net? I have 16 days left to decide. The clock is ticking.....Any suggestions?
