Do you live in a HOUSE or a HOME?

When I was a child, we were on a very tight budget (poor).  We, literally, lived in a structure that had been converted from a garage but it was our HOME.  It had a slab concrete floor with no floor coverings, hot water only in the bathroom, and there was no ceiling (just exposed rafters).  This was, nevertheless, our HOME.

After my Mom and Dad died, my brother and I went to live with an Aunt and Uncle in their HOUSE.  My Aunt & Uncle's HOUSE was much nicer than our HOME.  It had hot water in the kitchen AND bathroom and it had ceilings!  But it was never HOME.

Our HOME was where we belonged, where there was unconditional love and our refuge from the rest of the world.  The HOUSE our Aunt and Uncle provided was a place to live until we grew up and could get out on our own.  There was obligation but not love and happiness in that HOUSE.

As a real estate agent, I think of every sale as a HOME sale.  I want every client to think of that purchase as the place where they will create happy memories... where they belong, where there is unconditional love and will serve as their refuge from the rest of the world.

As the old saying goes:  "HOME is where the heart is".

When I do a home inspection, just for variation, I change between house and home in the written report. Sometimes I think about which word I prefer to use in a given context. It really does make a difference in the way it sounds.

Steven,  "Home" has a warm emotional feeling.  In my opinion, you are inspecting the house.  Just the facts man... no emotion involved.

Carol - what a touching post.  Home equals heart and spirit and soul and love to me - my parents always made such a loving and warm home for us, no matter where we lived as we were growing up.

Home really is where the HEART is!

Hi Carol

"Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home!"  A touching story.  Well done and very inspirational.

Ann & Allison:  I think as we grow older we truly understand the difference in a house and a home... AND the  "Home is Where The Heart Is" and "There is No Place Like Home" slogans.

Carol I too came from a poor family and have some very fond memory's from that surrounding. I can remember before our city had a big city type grocery store we always went to neighborhood stores. When we went I would head to the back where the butcher was and he would give me a weenie to eat. I always missed that after our first big store opened and the small stores begin to disappear. Your posting actually brought tears to my eyes. I can tell from your short but to the point article that you are what I would consider an excellent REALTOR! 5 point for sure!

Danny:  Thanks for reading my short article... and thanks for the kind words!   I really miss the Mom and Pop stores of the olden days.  We had one about 3 blocks from our house where we'd go buy penney candy.    I still prefer to patronize the small businesses.  Maybe it's a flashback to some fond memories of my childhood.  Best Wishes to you.

Carol - A beautiful example that home is not the structure, but the love inside.
