The nerves were surprising to me. I was going to speak to children at my daughter's elementary school and I was nervous and excited.... It was Career Day 2009 and I was there to explain why I had become a REALTOR!
I was set to go. I had my laptop turned on and set to a program where the kids could try their hand at designing a room with their choice of colors, cabinets, and floors. I had one of my lockboxes nearby so students could see what it was like to open it with a remote, computerized key and I had sheets to hand out for them to tell me what they wanted in their Dream Home. I was ready and still felt that my stomach was a little topsy turvy. Would I be able to hold their attention when I told them why I had become a REALTOR?
And then I began to tell my young audience of mini clients how I loved being a REALTOR. I shared how much I enjoy working with people and helping them find their "Dream Home". I explained that in a way REALTORS are like teachers because we educate our clients on the process of selling or buying a home. I shared how it makes me smile to see clients so happy when they receive keys to their new home. The children shot their hands in the air and began to ask questions: What kind of car do you have to take people around in?...How many houses have you sold?....How long have you been a REALTOR?
They shared their REAL ESTATE stories with me. One child told me that their house was for sale, but hadn't sold yet. Another one told me his dad was a REALTOR and drove a Cadillac. This made me smile. I asked him to tell his dad hello for me. He was very pleased.
A few volunteers enthusiastically came up to the front of the class to my laptop and worked the design program where one participant chose yellow walls, blue cabinets, and wood floors. We agreed the kitchen looked like it belonged in a beach cottage. They watched as I opened my lockbox and thought it was cool when they saw how the key box popped open to produce a house key. They had fun and I had an incredible time!
It was great seeing their happy faces. My stomach wasn't topsy turvy any longer and I had made an impact with my Mini clients in the audience and who knows....possible REALTORS of Tomorrow.
