I hit the half-million point mark on points last week.  Actually, the AR guys were kind enough to give me a "new dad" gift by rounding my points a little bit so that I could hit exactly 500,000 (see screen shot at right).

When I started on ActiveRain back in August 2007 (20+ months ago), I never would have conceived of having a point total in this range.  I just knew that I enjoyed the interaction and the friendships that I was developing.

Then, along the way, something else happened.

I realized that I really love to write, and write I did.  I have composed almost 800 posts on this blog to date.  I have written posts for SEO purposes, posts about my family, silly posts, tutorials, market reports, posts that I was dared to write (seriously), and posts to help others.

I haven't had as much time to write lately, primarily because of our latest addition and my wife's pregnancy prior to that.  My family needs me more than my blog needs me - it's that simple.

I am happy to report that I have closed a handful of deals this year already which came directly from ActiveRain.  In fact, now that I have been doing this for over a year and a half, I am astounded by the number of direct consumer contacts that I receive now, many of whom claim to have been reading my blog for months.

Think about that for a second and let it sink in.

Since consumers rarely comment on my posts here, I really have no way to gauge how many of them are reading my stuff unless they call or email me.  However, I have a far larger audience than my comments would indicate.

I got curious today to see which one of my posts has generated the most traffic overall.  I wasn't really surprised to find that it is this one:

Austin Texas Relocation Package

In fact, that post (which only garnered 30 comments) has had 18,512 clicks as of today.  Yes, you read that last line correctly.  That means that over 18,000 people have come across this post, most likely because it holds the #1 or 2 position on Google AND Yahoo for this term and its variants.

I am currently working with some clients from New York who found the relocation package post first, and it served as the portal to the rest of my blog.  They are looking to move this summer sometime, and they will probably spend $500,000 or thereabouts on a condo downtown.

I guess I just wanted to share this stuff with you in order to encourage you to continue writing.  If you feel discouraged because you aren't getting leads, GIVE IT TIME.  Keep cranking out good, original content and you WILL be found!

Thanks for reading!

Congratulations on hitting 500,000.  I joined before a lot of people who pondered too much on what to post so never grew much in points.  I was trying to write for the AR community - contribute since I received so much.  Now, with my outside blog, I have been writing for the community where I do business.  I watch my stats and know a lot of people read my market analysis etc. which encourages me.  While it is nice to get comments here, those are the telling #s for creating business.

Can you and Donna move to another city?  You are killing Austin agents!

We all are very proud of you and you have helped alot of other agents in improving their results in their blogging activity.....especially me.  Now the race for a million......... You, personally, have helped shaped AR and you should feel proud.  We may never get the blogging results that you have achieved, but we have all improved and will improve because of you.

thx......

Jason, wow. That is amazing. I just realized that the clicks on my market analysis for my areas are getting large amounts of hits, and I thought why on earth would any AR members be looking? Hmm.... could it be? Other people are looking at my stuff? I am seeing large hits, some in the 500 for things I have done and few comments.

You are making me think differently about things.

Way to go, by the way. I am so inspired, impressed, and all around in awe!

Jason - (On average) how long would you say it takes you to compose a post? And a follow up question (again a guestimate is fine) how much more time would you say on average you spend reading and interacting than you do posting? (I know I probably spend more than 10 times reading my forums than I do posting on them so I figure you have a similar sense)

Inquiring minds want to know.

Incidentally - the word I need to type in to make this comment is papaya - Papa Yay! (close enough) congrats dude.

And to think we started actively blogging around the same time.  Madness.  I see the same pattern with my business as it correlates to my blog, though.  Over 50% of this year's sales and current active client base is attributable to my blog directly or other social media endeavor (they're all interconnected, and I don't really give a fig as to which source deserves the ultimate credit).  Not too bad for a couple of knock-around agents who had to listen to a vocal few detractors who somehow decided we we doing it all wrong with our shenanigans, off topic ramblings, comment hijacking hilarity, etc.  Score one for the good guys and congrats on the cool half mil.  At my glacial pace, I'll see you there in another two years.

Gosh, I saw you had 99 comments so I wanted to put you in triple digits. You deserve at least that much for slaving over a hot blog. Congratulations!

Make it 18,513 clicks on the Relocation package. That was(is) a great post. It must have taken many hours to piece together. Nice job. Congratulations on the 500,000 bet when you began, you had no idea where the journey would take you. Nice accomplishment.

Congratulations on the new baby and your success - both with the number of points/blogs and the clients....I've recently fallen off the AR bandwagon a bit but have found that I'm getting leads...its amazing...and I haven't done a 1/4 of what you've done...so I'm back with a vengeance!  Good luck with the new baby and its always great to hear about your successes.

Work you fingers to the bone and what do you get? Boney fingers..er make that boney blogger fingers. That's alot of key strokes and imagination for the 500,000 point buzzer to go off. Way to go Jason (high five slapping sound). When's the party in your backyard and what do you want us all to bring to celebrate?

Crouch - I recall one of the first times I came across you, when you gave me a ring at the office.  I also recall you saying something about this Jennifer girl who was seemingly flirting with me on one of my posts.  Hmmm:)

Congrats, big man.  Your time and persistence has certainly paid off and I'm glad you get the recognition for your hard work.  Take care and I'll see you at the next 500,000.

Morgan - For this particular post, it took me about 15 minutes.  I think I average around 20-30 minutes per post, or maybe 45 minutes for a longer, more involved one.  Obviously, the "relocation package" post was an amalgam of about 20-30 other posts, so that is a whole different ballgame.  As for the time spent commenting/reading, I used to spend hours each day perusing posts, but I am somewhat limited now (maybe an hour or so daily) because of our growing brokerage and our new baby.  Thanks for asking - hope you're doing well!

Lisa - I am not at all upset by the "Todd" comment. I was just giving you a hard time about it.  No worries -

Sardi - I remember that conversation well.  Hope you and Jennifer are both doing well.  I understand that a move was made, correct?  I still think your "Summer Breeze" post was one of my favorites ever.

Jason,

Congrats on the points achievement, feature and localism post that brings in so much business. How long did it take you to write that post? I am sure quite some time. I am bookmarking that post to help me write a localism post to draw in more business.

Wow.......cool stuff Jason.  You are inspiring to say the least.  I don't even have 20K points and I just got a lead from a blog post.  And we're looking at homes tomorrow!  Now this is very cool.  They buyers are already qualified, they've read my home buyer book and they're ready to rock and roll.

I am fast becoming one of those AR addicts I read about at first and thought they were just a bit 'titched in the cabessa"!  Not anymore. I'm hooked.

Welcome to the new baby!

Judy - I was actually thinking of having a gathering in late August, during the big KW national meeting that takes place here.  I am definitely up for doing something this summer.

Mike - The post itself didn't take horribly long, but since it includes tons of other articles, the total time was probably 12-18 hours.

Jeff - I didn't ask for it!  They just gave me a few extra points to give me the round number.

Russell - Welcome to ActiveRain!  I see that you are brand-new here, so this probably doesn't mean much to you yet.  After you have been here awhile contributing, you will better understand the effort involved to achieve this number.  Thanks!

Mary - I rank 6th overall on ActiveRain.

Hi Jason!  Congratulations and you know, you do everything right here in the Rain!  Thanks for being such a mentor to SO many--I think you probably have the largest following here on Active and you are SO deserving--always so humble and so helpful!

As for the relo package--wasn't that Adam's idea?  I would expect that was the most viewed--I've played around with posts like that and seen that most of them that garner the numbers are local posts.

I also referred another AR member to you for some SEO guidance.  I don't know if he'll call or read your work first but, really nice guy--you'll enjoy working with him.

Anyway, hope all is well with the new baby and mom and that dad is hanging in there too!  Have a great week Mr. 1/2Million Man!
