Blog Entry: Chairs of Character: A pictoral guide to stylish furniture Vol II. And then there's Mod

The modern style when set in a modern architectural setting can be dramatic, eye catching and memorable. If you are staging a modern home keep a few simple rules in mind to help effectively merchandise with modernity.

  • Emphasize Clean, simple, geometric lines, shapes, and organic forms. Repetition of shapes and form draws the eye through the space.

  • Use materials that reflect the movement plastics, molded veneers, chrome, and steel. Natural elements such as bamboo, sea grass, and coral work to convey the architectural aspects of nature.

  • Keep it simple, form follows function and if it doesn't have a function don't use it. Minimalism follows the rules of function, which dictates keep it simple, and that brings us full circle, get it!

  • Don't shy away from using bold pattern, color and contrast.

Aloha Kimo ~ While I don't like modern in my own home, I find that I can appreciate it when I see it magazine spreads.

Thanks for the tips and please post more.  I'm more transitional in my own home but I know many of the condos in south FL will call for a more contemporary/modern design.  It's helpful to know the key elements in modern design.

I'm eclectic and find the clean lines of modern furniture can really compliment a large array of styles.  Kinda like sorbet between courses.

Aloha Kathy, I love the simplicity of modern design especially within the context of modern architecture. I think it's a take it or leave design style for many people.

Aloha Kathy, modern design is truly a stagers ultimate design vehicle. It directly ingrains the furnishings into the architecture creating a symphonic unity of line, shape, and space.

Aloha Cathy, Moooi is one of my favorites. They have a wonderful sense of whimsy.

Aloha Alyce, I can definitely see the modern style cleansing the design palette. Thanks for commenting.

Thanks so much for keeping us up to date on the more modern side of things.  Like Kathy, modern isn't personally my thing (and really wouldn't work particularly well in Charleston), but I have a huge appreciation for it. It's important to keep up on the trends too... you never know when you may need to know.  Thanks so much!

Aloha Michelle, mahalo for commenting. I love modern myself.

Aloha Isabel, the racks are very interesting and architectural, perfect for modern decor. Thanks for stopping by.

Aloha Melissa, Charleston is definitely a traditional / transitional kind of town but you never know when a modern dwelling might pop up. In Honolulu we have everything imaginable except maybe polar decor.

Love that modern look...not too many in my direct area, but nearby for the lofts, etc.  Good post.
