The San Diego Food Bank's Letter Carrier's Food Drive is May 9, 2009

The site of the San Diego Food Bank Drive on May 9 - Jeff DowlerThe National Association of Letter Carriers is participating in a food drive here in the San Diego area to benefit the San Diego Foodbank. How cool is that?

The statistics on the number of folks who face hunger in San Diego is pretty staggering, according to the SDFB...about 480,000 (with almost 200,000 of them children under the age of 18). And the problem has worsened in recent times due to the escalating unemployment.

The San Diego Food bank has been around since 1997 as a resource for government and donated food to help poor families, senior citizens and children. Monetary donations are also always welcome and can provide a substantial impact - $1 means food for 3 meals.

You can also donate food virtually with a few clicks of your mouse. Neat, huh?

I think it's pretty impressive for the Letter Carriers to participate in this wonderful effort to help deal with hunger in San Diego. Residents are asked to put out their canned foods and other nonperishable items out by their mail box on MAY 9, 2009.

So go on, San Diego, let's help a little bit. How much easier can it get?

Jeff, this is indeed a great  effort  for the Letter Carriers to help in dealing with hunger in San Diego. Perhaps this could be done in all the citiies...wouldn't that be great!   A great idea "Residents are asked to put out their canned foods and other nonperishable items out by their mail box on MAY 9, 2009"....they don't have to deliver...just put the food by their mail boxes.  I am sure you will get a lot of donations.

Hi Jeff, This is a great effort. I had chaired an effort not unlike this and this time is was orchestrated by the real estate community. Everyone in all walks of life will embrace this. These efforts to look after our own gives everyone a chance to do their part. Working as an entire community will get the job done. Thank you for your efforts to get the word out.

What a great idea. The letter carriers are going to be there anyway, and this helps to cut down on fuel use and carbon emissions, and better yet, it helps those in need.  It's a fantastic effort, no matter how you view it.

Rebecca - I sure hope so. It is certainly a worthy cause.

Thanks, William. We ran a mini food collection for an event we had at our home as few weeks ago and filled up a big barrel for the North County group. There really is so much need, and most folks aren't even aware.

Lisa - agreed. There are lots of pros to this. I HAD to say something about it when I learned what was going on. Hope this becomes more commonplace.

Jeff
