Want to end 2009 in better financial condition than you had in January? Here are some ways to do it.
* First, make a disaster kit. Put copies of your will, passport, mortgage statement, property insurance, and car title in a waterproof bag you can get to fast in case of a tornado, fire, flood, or hurricane. Throw in some of your favorite photos and photos that will help you identify family members if you get separated.
* Get that free money. If your employer contributes to your 401(k), plan to contribute the maximum amount that the company will contribute to.
* Add 1 percent to your retirement savings. You won't miss it, and it adds up over time. If you can't contribute the maximum to your 401(k), at least contribute more than you did last year.
* Pay off your credit card that has the highest interest rate. Call the credit card company to see if they will reduce the rate. Sometimes they will if you have routinely paid on time Make your monthly payment double the amount you would usually pay if you can, and pay the minimum on lower-rate cards.
