Nice shot.

I read through the comments, too.

Marchel has to remember that all plants grew outside before we had houses. Over in the East Texas Piney Woods there are lots of ferns growing wild, as well as lots of other unusual plants.

For June - All ferns have fiddleheads. Some are just more pronounced than others. For example, here's a fiddelhead from an Australian tree fern:

Fiddlehead of an Australian tree fern

For Mary - If your fern dries out, you either are not watering it enough or you have it in a drafty location. To keep them moist, you can do three things:

  1. Put some sphagnum moss on the soil to help prevent excessive evaporation.
  2. Put the pot in a larger pot plate, put some decorative pebbles in the pot plate, and then fill the pot plate with water. Don't do this with red clay pots. In fact, don't plant your ferns in red clay pots because they are porous, letting the soil dry out too quickly.
  3. Group house plants together to provide a better micro-environment with better humidity.

Our wonderful plant geneticists have come up with some drought tolerant varieties, and there actually are some ferns that grow in full sunlight.

WOW, Russel, I know you are a thorough person but wow...great information and thanks for answering all of the questions!  I hope Mary saw your fern tips!

OK...so if all ferns have fiddleheads...are they all edible?  I have never heard of them being served before...how do you prepare them?

Thanks for the excellent comment and info:-)
