SST (Speechless Sunday with Text): The USS Midway and "Unconditional Surrender"

By

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and leave a comment.I went to downtown San Diego the other day to take a leisurely walk along the harbor, something I like to do once a month or so. With so much to see and do here in San Diego, and a lot of it free, I find that I have to actually schedule time to go out and enjoy it here.

The San Diego Port Commission runs the harbor area, and they like to put up some unusual public art, occasionally even commissioning something for a permanent display.

A few years ago, they commissioned a huge sculpture based on the famous Life magazine photograph of 1945. The sculpture is titled "Unconditional Surrender," which I think was also the title of the photograph. Here's the sculpture from a distance:

You can barely see some people on the sidewalk to the left, so you can imagine how big the sculpture is. Off to the right is the USS Midway, now a San Diego museum, and off to the left are some restaurants and Tuna Harbor where the tuna fishing boats dock.

Here are two more pictures of the sculpture and the Midway :

When the sculpture was installed, there was an uproar in this bastion of Republican conservatism because the guy was romantically kissing the girl in public, and people could walk under the girl and look up her skirt. Oh, well. The weather is beautiful.... And by the way, there's nothing to see -- I looked! LOL

I think it captured the sentiment of the time and the romance that sprung up.  Isn't it funny that people just have to find things to criticize.

Hey, Connie.

Imagine what kind of world we could live in if everyone was positive. The possibilities are endless, and I think President Obama knows that.

Jim, no PDA in San Diego.  Wow, the USN that I talked to were wrong.  I think the ones that complained about the statue are, well, lets say, "Mental Challenged".  Funny for such a Navy town to be reserved.

Hi Jim: That was a great set of photos - I didn't appreciate the "size" of the statue until the last photo --> great perspective shots!
