When we moved from New York into our North Carolina home in the month of December, I did not expect to be seeing fall foliage! I was so excited by the sight of this lovely tree in our back yard that was fully dressed to the nines in a spectacular display of vibrant golden & crimson tones"We have fall foliage!!!"  I excitedly called to me husband! Come see! ! Coming form the northeast we were so thrilled to see the colorful autumn leaves!

The Bradford Pear tree is a favorite accent tree in our North Carolina residential landscape planting. Its one of the first trees to set out buds and the last to loose it leaves in late December. It transitions from exquisite springtime blossoms to shiny green leaves, to a stunning display crimson & gold foliage lasting from fall into early winter.  Its an eye catching tree for sure! We are blessed to have a nice one in view of our back kitchen windows and deck!

Happy Spring!

Ginger, I have a pear tree in my back yard that is amazing for a week every year, then it starts to produce huge quantities of totally inedible pears - the kind that crack a tooth if you try to bite into them.  We've tried everything - wrapping them in newspaper and storing them in a cool place, stewing - nothing has worked.  The squirrels won't even take them!

We have Bradford Pears here in Ohio.  They don't get any fruit do they?

I think they are pretty but I do not like the smell of them.  I know though that they smell different to me than they do to others.

Ginger, I love the Bradford Pear trees too. Great shot. I also love how the leaves are the last to go in the fall. So lots of green to look at longer.

Ginger,
The Bradford pear trees are gorgeous, the only downside is that do hold up very well in strong winds.

Hi Pat, The Bradford pear is strictly ornamental.. No fruit! You must have an awful  mess to clean up Pat!

Mary, Ours are green now too.  Wish the blossoms would linger longer!white longer!

Maureen, Gee I am very sensitive to smells...We have a tea olive bush that makes me nauseous when it puts  out blooms. .. Got to get Roger to pull it out this year. I have not noticed a particular smell from our pear tree.   Are you speaking of the blooms or the green leaves. Heck I am going to head outside an take a whiff! LOL!

It's me... I smell fish... other people smell flowers I smell fish.  I am NOT the only one.  I have Googled it and found other people who smell fish (or garbage or something else not pleasant.)   On a walk last year I asked "what do you smell" everyone else said flowers.  Ours are starting to bloom here.  I will test it again.

Missy, Do your Michigan Bradfords show autumn foliage? The colrs are vibrant here!

Cynthia, yes high winds can be a problem. Our neighbors lost  one before we moved next door.

Maureen,.. LOL! I did the smell test... no smell at all~ And Iknow the blossms did not smell when I shot my photos. I did check it out online and found a lot of articles about smelly pears trees...one site said maybe not every year? i am baffled!

The petals look as soft as cotton.  Do they have a fragrance?
