Nothing like showing properties while fighting off buggies!   Want to keep pests away without being stinky with bug spray?  I can help!
I plant lavender and citronella plants around the yard to keep bugs at bay and they work well.  Good tip for home owners in buggy areas.
Essential oils such as Lavender, Tea tree oil and Citronella from the stone root, Collinsonia canadensis can be worn on the skin and in hair to effectively keep mosquitoes away. It is best to dilute these powerful essential oils in a little olive oil and test this new mixture on a patch of skin before applying to your entire body.
In the event mosquitoes were not repelled effectively, many herbs can be used to relieve the itching from bites. Wash insect bites with a Tea tree oil based soap and rinse with witchhazel. Next, dab freshly washed bites and lemon juice or cider vinegar. Before bedtime, apply lavender oil or cinnamon oil by rubbing on the affected area. As well as helping repel mosquitoes these oils also take away itching from bites.  Maybe find a spray bottle to make your own spray with olive oil, Tea Tree Oil & either Lemongrass or Lavender as your natural mosquito repellant!

I add Tea Tree Oil to fragrance free/oil free moisturizer in the summer with a few drops of Lemongrass oil.

Hopefully that will keep you from being eaten alive this summer!

Scented Geraniums work too and for bites lets not forget the aloe plant.  Both are easy to grow and HOME and GARDEN essentials.

Great advice, Jane.  I have also heard that thyme works wonders in keeping away the bugs.  It is sold as a repellent in natural health food stores.  I haven't tried it myself yet, but a friend of mine swears by it.

A freind just told me they make a strong garlic spray too, but I think i'll pass on that one! lol  I wonder if eating a lot of garlic will keep the bugs away.  I'm sure it will keep people away!

Jane, I heard Dr. Mehmet Oz say that a product named Skin So Soft repelled mosquitoes. I do have some English Lavender in the yard, but the Bumblebees won't let me near it! Thanks for the post.

Skin So Soft is a product made by Avon.  It smells great and works good if the bugs aren't too terribly bad.  In our area, the bugs can get pretty thick, at which point it's not quite as effective.

I had used Skin So Soft in the past - it works for about 2 hours at a time so be sure to carry it with you and don't forget to reapply!
