A sea of flowers at the Dallas Arboretum

A first for me, I lost one of my subscribers over the weekend.  This made me contemplate the process of why one subscribes to a blog and what may cause one to unsubscribe.

Subscribers to blogs are generally attracted by posts from our ActiveRain members that:

  • Strike an interest in topic matters
  • Well written
  • Educational (how to messages, technology, building the business, etc)
  • Has common interests
  • Attributes that others admire such as photography
  • Motivates, inspires, makes you laugh

Other features that draws attention:

  • Short, concise, not too long
  • Visual - presents itself with visuals, ease of reading, laid out reader friendly

How to draw subscribers to your blog:

  • Be courteous, be known to respond back to those who leave comments on the post
  • Send a personal email when the occasion warrants to a particular comment or general check in to a subscriber
  • If a subscriber is consistent and is a frequent visitor to your blog, be sure to add him/her to you subscriber list and become a reader of their posts.
  • Notice a new visitor with a great comment.  Go to their blog and read a few of their posts and leave comments.

 Your subscription list:

  • Be loyal to your list, follow the posts and leave comments on as many if not all as you can.
  • Become acquainted with the member, know about what they share regarding values, family, hobbies, passions.  Remember that and when you leave comments be sure to incorporate what you know to add more of a link that you care, understand and have become like family, friend through their writings.
  • Be sincere, interject your true responses.
  • Be gracious, when a member goes out of their way to send an email, respond.  After all we are family in AR and support one another, celebrate with one another and give advice, receive advice.

So this comes down to the question of why did I lose a subscriber?  Not sure and shame on me, I don't know who it was which in itself gave pause for me to reflect.  I do recommend that a periodic overview of whom you subscribe to be made.

  • Keep your list fairly lean and at a manageable level so you can be a frequent reader and comment giver and stay more connected.
  • Removed blogs from your list after a long period of time that no news posts were made.
  • If the content of some just did not have the initial attraction that you had once sought then when you lose interest unsubscribe.
  • If a blog just seems to turn more towards just listings on their inventory or a commercial of their services and no content of substance, if this is not what you seek in your subscriber relationship, unsubscribe.
  • If the posts bring you down and are negative on a continued bases, unsubscribe, you can get that from page one of a newspaper.

Like seeds in a garden, your subscribers should increase as your presence on Active Rain grows.  It requires nurturing, continued care, some rain from our members and it will bloom and give so much more back to you!  Weed your garden and plant the positives of sunshine.

So many good points here and what great pictures, I am completely on board with following and commenting on blogs that I like and support. I just realized that I have not subscribed to your blog but will do so right after submitting this comment!

Connie. I too just subscribed to your blog. So now you are down one and up two!!!! Better than "even steven".

I used to comment on my subscribers a lot more than I do npow. It just seems I never have enough time anymore. Plus I have almost 1000 subscribers. It's just not possible to keep up anymore. I do appreciate each and every one of my subscribers though.

Great post, Connie.  You are spot on with your points.  I know that I go to my subscribed blog list to post comments first before I even go to the Featured Posts.  Gotta show the love first to the ones I interact with most, right?

Bryant - this is great ... I certainly did not author this post to get more subscribers but will certainly enjoy getting to know you through your writings as well.  I really, really try to respond on all my posts but sometimes with business and if I get a whole lot of comments then I will email direct some comments to my special subscribers as to not appear to snub others.  It just adds that touch!

Heather - absolutely how I feel.  I do try to branch out so as to not lose out of getting to see other posts and find others that I feel have a great presence, etc.

Hi Connie,

Can you find out who your subscribers are on Activerain?  I only have ONE (yes, It is possible) but I would really like to get to know that person, because they must be brilliant! HA!

I am actually worried I might be my own (and only) subscriber.  I might have signed up just to make myself feel better.

Now that I am actually participating in discussions, I should figure these kinds of things out.  I am also only subscibed to one persons blog.......but again, it could be my own.  I hope this makes you laugh.

Kim

I just found out how to retrieve this about a couple of weeks ago from another AR member.

You go to your home page ... click on statics ... at the top of that page there are a couple of tabs, go to Subscribers and click ... there you go your list.

When you subscribe to a blog you go to the site of the member, it may be in a few locations but usually on their home page or post page it will say Subscribe button ... click.  That person will be added to you page that you view when you click to blogs.  A line of your subscribers will form and you will be able to track when they have a new post as it will alternate in the line, the newest post will go to the top.  It will have how many posts a member has, etc.  Happy playing with the AR blogs, posts, etc. it is a discovery process.  Also go to the Help/FAQ to find out things and follow the staff on new things.  Their posts will be featured - tab on the blog that reads Featured.

Good luck!!

Connie, what an absolutely beautiful picture!  It makes me want to run out to the nursery and buy flowers to plant in my yard!  I know how to view my subscibers list but how do you know when someone unsubscibes you?  Do you get a notification?  I agree with you on reading and commenting to the ones you subscribe, but my schedule has been so hectic lately that I can not seem to keep up.  But I guess that is a good problem to have!

Debbie - a great problem to have and I understand because I have those days back to back as well.  I just try to slid in a few comments here and there.  Also if I have been absent for a while, I go to the blog of a subscriber and read several posts in one setting and comment to catch up.

I know when someone unsubscribed by the subscriber count that is reflected on your home page.  I keep up with that number.  Right now the AR system does not send out notices.  I guess you could even go as far as print out your list to keep up with them.

I've enjoyed your posts so give yourself some space to do business and write when you have that moment.

Connie:  What a great post... so much great information on how to attract new subscribers.  I must compliment you that, for someone who has only been on Active Rain for about seven months, your posts are of such great quality... more like some who have been here for years.  Thanks so much for sharing such an informative and well-written post.  Take care...

Also... I have "flagged" it to suggest that it be "featured."  It deserves a Gold Star.  :)

Connie...

This is a great post, very informative and visually striking! I try very hard to read all of those that are regular commenters on my post, but as numbers grow over time it gets harder and harder to keep up.

But it is about building lasting relationships, and also, genuine friendships. You're on a great roll, please keep them coming!

Richard - means a lot for you to send those nice compliments in my direction.  I loved the flower scenes I took at the Arboretum, just a place where the camera could take nothing but incredible beautiful photos.   I try hard to write posts that not only help me but hopefully gives back.  Thanks for your comments and visits to my post.

Connie, great reminder.  I didn't know we were notified of losing a subscriber...hmm...I know when I did some "cleaning up" of my AR a few months ago, I had such a HUGE list of groups and blog subscriptions, I went thru and deleted some...maybe I shouldn't have.  I didn't want to offend anyone, just trying to keep things a bit more managable and focus on the regulars...

Kristin - no notices, just noticed my count amount down on my home page for subscribers to my blog.  No worries about offending.  You can always add them back if you re-evaluate later.

GOOD AFTERNOON CONNIE!  I came back to this post several times as I was thinking about what to write.  I liken being "un-subscribed" to having good friends.  I have a great friend that leaves message after message for me; emails to say hi, and even though I don't always get back with her - she never writes me off her list.  I know she is a true friend.  It's the same here on AR - maintaining regular communication is challenging when you have so many associations and subscribers. Not to mention a life and work! True friends will stick with you and know that you haven't forgotten them - you are just side-tracked and they know you'll be back. Things come full circle - your blog is wonderful I suspect that person will ultimately find their way back! -- Gabrielle

Hey Connie, Until Craig Rutman showed me how to look at the subscribers, I hadn't thought about it until now. It makes sense that you can lose readers if you don't blog consistently too.

I think I might be subscribing to three or four people. I basically don't subscribe or associate until I know the people extremely well. I do have a list of people with whom I will associate and subscribe, and I'll probably do that during the end-of-year holidays this year.

I do like to return comment for comment, so when people come to my blog, I go to theirs. But rather than go each day, I like to go once every so often and then camp out onn their blogs and comments. This means they get up the next morning with 10-20 comments, which really gets them all excited.

Hope you're excited this morning. This is #7 and I'm not finished. LOL

I liked your very last recommendation:

If the posts bring you down and are negative on a continued bases, unsubscribe, you can get that from page one of a newspaper.

And pages 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.

The comics are on pages 8 and 9.

I'm still laughing.
