Losing the people we love is one of Life's curses, the price we pay for experiencing the extraordinary joy an open heart affords us.  We are all mere visitors here.  Our hearts' connections are less transient than our limited physical existence.  Never as feeble as our bodies, these deep connections endure through time and impact many generations.

The Optimistic Spirit of my Grandmother, who passed away this morning, lives on within me and my children.  Her innocence, her loving and forgiving heart will forever guide us through our own lives and impact the many people we are entwined with.

Born in Transylvania in 1912, the year the Titanic sank, my Grandmother lived through two World Wars.  She experienced famine and abuse.  Many bad things have happened to her, yet she chose to always forgive, move on and focus on the positive.   No matter how adverse her circumstances, she never lost hope.  She was fiercely loyal and the breadth of her love was boundless.  My father had heart problems and she offered him her heart.  When he passed away because of his condition, she was sad that no one took her up on her offer.  That is who my Grandmother was.  She always gave.  She always forgave.  She always hoped.

At the height of her beauty, in her late twenties, she became a widow.  With a two year old child and many debts to repay, she rebuked the offer to become the concubine of a wealthy man, choosing to work two jobs instead.  She labored in the steel mill by day and unloaded coal at night.  Within several years she repaid the debt her husband left her with, aging many years in the process.  She didn't mind.  Living the honest life was the only way to keep a pure heart.  The lines on her face and the prematurely gray hair were a fair price to pay for a head held high and eyes that were as clear and loving as her soul.

I had the privilege of being raised by this woman.   I was the apple of her eye, the nucleus of her heart, the most important person in the world to her.  She loved me unconditionally and thought that I was the most extraordinary human being on the face of this planet.  When my son came along, she devoted herself to him, pouring out all that love all over again.  This morning me and my son wailed together over the loss of the woman who loved us both fiercely, unconditionally, eternally.

There are many things I can say about my Grandmother.  There are not enough words to express my gratitude and appreciation for her and for what she will forever mean to me and my son.   My Grandmother's fire of Life has been extinguished this morning, but the indelible light she left in my soul will forever guide me.  She has taught me that although money can render physical comfort, power and freedom, only Love can give us all those things only at a deeper level, one that is everlasting.

As per her request, my grandmother's ashes will be scattered over the Ocean.  Her mortal body will be mere dust in the wind, yet her Love and spirit will guide me forever.

As of this morning, I have one more Angel watching over me...

Mirela, first, I am so sorry for the loss of your precious grandmother here on earth, but, like you, I believe that her spirit lives on forever.  Always, you will have her with you and you will see her in the lives of those she influenced. Secondly, her story gives me great insight into the wonderful, positive woman that you are... I can certainly see her spirit in you!  I'm so glad you shared her story and the sweet photos with your many friends and supporters in The Rain.  I know you will have many prayers and kind words offered to you.  None of them will be enough to take away the sadness of this day, but the love of friends and family given freely can be a comfort in the days ahead.  God bless you, my friend!

So sorry for your loss. My Aunt is now 96 and was like a Mother to me. The trick is to listen and learn while we have them with us because even sticking around for 96 years, it seems their time with us is too short. Sounds like your Grandmother was, and will remain a part of your life and your children. What a blessing - and what a loss.

As I read your tribute, my eyes brimmed over with tears.  Your grandmother sounds EXACTLY like my mother except she's from Teguicigalpa, Honduras/Central America.  Even to the part of wanting her ashes over the ocean.  Our heavenly Father gives us our own personal video camera within our memories that will forever be in our thoughts.  My prayer will be that HIS arms will wrap you/yours up and carry you through this time.  SHALOM be breathed down upon you.

Thank you all so very much!  Your kind words really help.

I know she was old and her body was so weak, but the egotistic part of me wanted more time with her.  I usually spend Sundays with her, but I've been working so much and I haven't been able to visit her for several weeks.

Just last night, before I went to bed, I thought of her and made a solemn commitment to spend this Sunday with her.   Instead, we are now planning her funeral and I feel so sad that I did not break away from it all and see her one more time.  We take life for granted, not realizing that our loved ones could be taken from us at any moment...

Mirela, beautiful post, brought tears to my eyes also. I pray that you will find peace in the days and months ahead. You do have her with you always. I am sure when you are on the beach looking at a beautiful sunset, you will feel the sky seem a bit more filled with color as she stands next to you and admires the sunset with you.

A poem for you:

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die...

So very sorry Mirela,

As I told you about your Father, it also applies to your Grandmother. You are her gift to the world as are your children. Because she lived, the world gained her legacy. Take comfort in those surrounding you both there and here.

Because she lived.

All my best, Bob

Thank you all so very much!  It gives me great comfort to share the memory of my Grandmother with you.

My mother is flying in from California tonight.  My son and his wife are coming in from NC tomorrow.  My sister is still trying to find a flight; they did away with bereavement fares.

My man is cooking my favorite foods:  zacusca and sarmale.  He has been my knight in shining armor through this and has taken care of all my business at the office today, while I went through my tears.

I've tried to take one phone call today, but cried through it all, so I gave up after that.  The finality of it all is what hurts the most.  I regret not having had the opportunity to see her again.  I love "mama Tilly" and I'll have her in my heart till the day I die!

Bob:  Many times I look at my family:  two brawny young men (my son & nephew), a beautiful young girl (my daughter), me, my sister and my mom... and then I look at this diminutive woman, under five feet tall and think:  if if wasn't for her, none of us would be here!

The beauty of your grandmother was obvious with the amazing words that you wrote.  It is a personal thing I know, but I feel like I know her too.  Those fond memories of her will be with you for a lifetime.

You wrote such a beautiful tribute to your wonderful grandmother.  It made me cry for you.  I remember the day my grandmother died and the wish to have had another day with her.  It is so painful.  All you can do now is continue to live each day making her proud.

I'm so sorry to hear of your grandmother's passing.  It sounds like she was a wonderful, powerful woman, who touched many in your family.  God bless, and may her memory be eternal.

Also, I hope that you and your loved ones are safe from the fires.  I can't imagine the pressures of facing such fires while you are grieving a loved one.
