Hazardous Waste Disposal Day for Catawba County, May 2, 2009

If you live in Catawba County, NC and have some old household products still lying around because they can't be just tossed in the garbage because their dangerous to the enviroment, or maybe some old electronics, it's time to load up the truck!

On May 2, Catawba County will be accepting all those types of products at the Catawba County Government Center parking lot, off Radio Station Road at the intersection of Highway 321 Business in Newton.

Things like paints, cleansers, solvents, antifreeze, batteries or used motor oils and old electronic devices like computer equipment, old radios, mobile phones, TVs, VCRs, calculators or copiers will all be accepted.  The times for the event will be from 9am until 3pm.

For more information on this one day collection, you may contact the Catawba County Department of Utilities and Engineering at 828-465-8217.

It's kind of interesting recycling hazardous waste out here because the recycling centers charge. It's like $25 to get rid of a computer or monitor. But every so often they have a free day. Unfortunately, those of us who have been around the block at least once know that, so we wait for the free day. Then you have to take the whole day off from work and skip breakfast, lunch, and supper in order to get in line since the cars will stretch out for miles.

yeah, they charge here, too, normally, but this "free" day usually comes about once a year or so, so we basically do the same thing.  Hopefully, the lines here won't be as long. :-)
