Nigerian transferee...

nigerianRelocation is a fun business.  I very much enjoy having the honor of meeting people not just from the U.S.A. but from other parts of the world.

Over the course of my career I have had the pleasure of relocating people from England, Ireland, France, Belgium, South Africa, Germany, Bulgaria, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Greece, Austria (no kangaroos) Australia (kangaroos) and New Zealand.

One country that seems to escape me when it comes to relocation is Nigeria.  The perplexing part is my total inability to convert these leads.  For some reason I get an inordinate amount of relocation requests from this lovely African country, but never, no not never have I have sold them a home.

Why just today I got this:

 DEAR REALTOR

I AM SENATOR  BOB EFFIONG FROM NIGERIA  AND I AM INTRESTED IN BUYING PROPERTY TO RELOCATING MY FAMILY TOO.IF YOU CAN HELP,PLEASE GET BACK TO ME WITH MORE INFORMATIONS ON HOW I CAN PROCEED. YOU CAN REACH ME BY E-MAIL.
REGARDS

SENATOR
14 AZIKIWE CLOSE
APO VILLAGE SENATORS QUATERS
GARKI ABUJA NIGERIA

The Senator's plea sounds quite genuine and honest, don't you agree?  For some reason, I can't figure out why, I will probably not work this lead.  Is that wise?  Could Senator Bob be real, or because his addy is NIGERIA he is destined to be ignored?

What should I do?  What would you do?  Should we all try to help him? How can I convert a Nigerian lead?

I've got a question: Why would a Nigerian senator relocate to the United States? That would be like Harry Reid relocating to England...

Kristal,

Maybe you should refer it to Randy..he loves toying with those emails. I get them too but mine was from the long lost cousin of the President...I would be careful with that one. Make sure to give them your bank account number to deposit the escrow. LOL!

Kristal, given all the e-mails going around from con-artist from Nigeria, I would not touch this one with a ten foot pole.

Dear Kristal Kraft,

Please accept my most humble apologies on behalf of the entire Ministry of Internet Commerce. “Senator Bob Effiong” is not a senator, nor is he even a Nigerian. His name is Mtumi B’ngasa, of the Republic of the Congo. He has been attempting to disrupt the legitimate internet business ventures of Nigeria.

I love Bob's reply. That was great. I don't know. You can try responding but i wouldn't. I think they like it where they are.

Bob is lucky.  The last dude from Nigeria that emailed me...his entire family was murdered by the opposition party and he needed to flee the country.  Lucky Lucky Bob.

Hi Kristal, I have received numerous Nigerian scam emails as everyone else does. Since this email does not ask you to deposit any funds you may be O.K. but I would still "Proceed with Caution" and of course verify everything.  Good luck to you my friend.

Kristal- The Nigerians are very busy on the Internet. They must send out thousands of banking and relocation emails per day. It is unfortunate that some legitimate requests may go unanswered because of the scams. i see however, that you and others do open them. i no longer do. Perhaps I should just in case one is legit.

I like Jays response but is the other guy really who he says he is or do they work together just to cause a diversion.

Are you a magha? I blogged about these schemes back in August on Active Rain, I'd give you the link but I might be comment spamming Kristal by doing so. The people the schemes prey on are called maghas.

There was a great LA Times article last year about the schemes. There's was a popular song in Nigeria about this line of business.   LA Times article.

Senator Effiong Bob truly is a Senator of Federal Republic of Nigeria but i do not think he will contact you in that manner for any transaction even if he wishes to relocate out of Nigeria,So this bad guys chooses to use names of their government officials to make the deals look real,do not take this offer serious just delete it for its a scam,i think using the name of a distinguished senator to scam people is unfortunate

I had a simliar email a couple years ago, which I naively responded to, and got an email back that, uh, clarified the scam for me.  About a month after that, I got an email from some other guy, bad grammar, vague request, very like the scam email.  I ignored it, and got another one, begging me to help him.  So I was kind of agressive with him, told him to produce his proof of funds, and then I'd email him some properties.  Turns out, he's a very nice man in Guam who bought a house with me a couple months later.  I felt like a complete a** for the way I treated him in the beginning, I made him prove everything he said.  Oops!

To the group ~

This has been a fun and interesting thread to watch. We discovered Nigeria does in fact have a Congress and a website.  Senator Bob Effiong does exist and he is in fact a Senator.  The sad part is, some unethical person is using Senator Bob's name to obtain some unduly gain.

I've always wondered why Nigeria is the home to so many of these scam artists. Do they have a scam college preparing kids for a future in rip offs?

Once again the sad part is there are so many good, honest people in Nigeria, but they are doomed to never be taken seriously on the internet.  I know I skim over an email message and if I see "Nigeria" in it, the delete key makes it go away.

Hopefully more and more of the public will be able to recognize scams and delete them as well.  It would be nice to think some long lost gazillionaire cousin thought enough of me to make me rich, but I doubt I'll ever be that luck.

I'll just have to keep selling real estate and earn my money the hard way...

Gosh I sold I house to his brother last month.  I am pissed that he did not tell me that the other part of the family was moving to Denver so I could get a referral fee.
