Can you take a moment and drop a comment here? Thanks

Yesterday Google finally announced why the heck we want a Google profile. Well for those of us who want additional search results on the web this is great news. For the average person this probably doesn’t matter too much because your friends can already find you but for those of us looking for some more of that good Google juice this is great news.

I will walk you through what you need to know to get this baby up and running.

google login

The first thing you should know is that by default this is not a public profile. The reason for this of course that you might not want people to spam you but those of us who want a bigger internet presence then this is the price we pay. So yes you will get your Gmail account spammed if it’s not already (and it probably is.) Anyways there are a few things you need to do to make it go public.

I don’t know where each of you is at as far as filling this section out. If you were good boys and girls this part was already filled out in case you wanted people to find you from your Google Blogger profile but for those of you who are naughty start filling this out. I would suggest that you use your real name. Some of the big areas here are going to be location of course because we want this profile to be seen on Google maps (it is probably just a matter of time for this to happen.)

profile
(click for a larger image)

google profile

It takes some time to get the profile to appear in search results. I put mine up last night and am still waiting for it to be indexed. I don’t know how long this will take but I can’t say what other areas you should be focusing on to maximize this profile for SEO purposes. One thing I will assume is that this profile will carry some serious weight and if it does have a lot of weight the sites that you link to will of course be sent some serious link juice. If you notice how it’s set up you can choose the title of the link which I am again assuming acts as anchor text for the link. Anchor text is what you are telling Google the site you are linking to is about so choosing good keywords that make sense to humans as well as targeting your niche is important. I would target interior pages as well as your blogs and any other site that you want more links built to (I would assume this is every site you have) I don’t know what limits are imposed here so I would pick and choose carefully for now. Google has some suggestions as well and they are good ideas. Choose wisely and if they let you put in more keep going. Once my profile is indexed I should be able to provide more information as to what you should be optimizing but the same rules should apply.

Some final notes.

Make sure your full name is listed so that it appears in search results. Google should guide you through the steps necessary to make sure your profile goes public.

Here is some more info from Google.

One more quick thing. Can everyone do me a favor and use their new Google profiles and then go to my website and “befriend” my website using Google friend connect? It’s located at the very top of my web site. Thanks. Oh and if you don’t have Gmail that’s probably why you don’t see a profile. I think you need Gmail to use this service.

One more thing yet.. can you see this post here http://activerain.com/blogsview/1045878/Active-Rain-I-Need-a-Favor? I really need some help with this. Thanks again.

Nannette you can either just take a picture any picture that you have the rights to use and then simply have it link to your profile. You can take any picture and make it link to something. I just take pictures and put them in. There are quite a few guides on how to do it.

Hi Shane -- This could be a powerhouse if Google ever starts cross-linking (in a serious way) their various offerings -- could you imagine a buyer looking at a listing on GoogleBase and it shows the agents near this property?

Shane - I saw this earlier this morning on another post and updated my profile.  I just checked to see if Google had indexed it and it had not so I went in and added my photo and within minutes it showed up on page 1 of Google.  I don't know how that could have made a difference but it might be a good idea to add your photo to your profile.

Thanks I did actually just go back and add my photo. I was working on so much I forgot. I sort of liked the smiley face thing though. I even verified it with knol which was some additional step and I still cant find mine! weird.

Shane - One more suggestion for you if you haven't done it already....Under the Add Links click on the little blue "add" link and it will move those links over to the My Links side which is where those links have to be to add that extra SEO.

Shane, I got a profile months ago.

Then  I got a new Google Address and of course set up a new Google Profile.

Here is the dilima:

When I set up the 2nd one, I was in a hurry and knew I could come back and add my photo. So I left it the UGLY PINK FLOWER.

Only I can't get my REAL PHOTO to stick. So on all the blogs I join that have google friend connect, I have the UGLY PINK FLOWER.

FYI, I have emailed Google, asked on forums, asked on Twitter, even emailed a few Google employees.

No one seems to know what to do to get my Photo to stay and the UGLY PINK FLOWER TO GO AWAY.

I figured out why I couldnt find mine in search. Apparently if you search O'Gorman and not OGorman then it means the difference between mine showing up or not. So you actually have to spell it wrong for it to show in results. I guess thats better than being named after someone famous. I would hate to try to build a web presence named Elvis or something like that.

Good job Shane!

Another important point when doing this profile is to create your profile in such a manner that it includes the areas you target. IMO, it doesn't do you much good to simply have your name and phone number as most people won't be searching for you in particular.

You need to think of the keywords for your target markets or niche and include those in your profile so that your profile shows up in the results when people search those specific keywords. For example: If you specialize in a community called Hyde Park - maybe you would make your name/description  - "Hyde Park Specialist" - Jane Realtor.
