Who's Not Green Today--Earth Day?

By
Education & Training with Alan Kells School of Real Estate/Howard Hanna Real Estate

Who's not green today?  Going green is even triumphing the Wearin o' the Green on St. Patrick's Day, March 17 in Erie, PA, a very Irish community.  Only those people who do not turn on the TV or internet or read print media have not been inundated with green feature stories or green ads.  It seems that every major advertiser is using green in their ads.  www.goerie.com  At Sam's Club earlier today I counted 8 'eco-friendly' products just inside the door.  A sticky note on one purchase read, "In an effort to help the environment, we have switched to this new container which uses less plastic, less energy to produce, ship & store, eliminating over 120,0000 lbs of plastic annually."

Earth Day Earth Day is not a new phenomen for me.  In 1970 my seventh grade science class organized a newspaper reclying campaign.  We used the money we received for additional science equipment. Wegmans grocery store is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 25.  Everyone who brings a stuffed bag of blue grocery bags between 11-3 will receive a Free reusable bag.

Kudos to the news media, manufacturers and merchants.  Now to the really BIG ??????????????

How am I Greening my little corner of the world?????????  Rather than just talk and write about green I thought that I would tell the Yonkers story with pictures.

  •  The Yonkers Ranch is located about one mile from the shores of Lake Erie.  We have about 6 acres including a trout stream.  Since we have lots of trees and do not use any chemicals on the lawn, we refer to our 'country lawn' to distinguish it from the lush, green suburban lawns.  In summer we like to sit on the front porch and 'watch the grass grow' per Dave Yonkers. Yes, we like to have glass of wine while we are watching, too.

  • I have been packing my lunch since high school.  When Dave & I got married ten years ago, I converted him, too.  Now he is my best reycler, of food, of course.  His lunch today is leftovers from last night's dinner.

  • My original compost bin, the bee hive, quickly became too small

  • I asked Dave to build a two part compost bin.  He used an old door and scrap wood

  • Gradually we are switching to CFL bulbs.  Saves $$$$$$$$$$$$$ and energy

  • We are saving blue grocery bags and plan to take them to Wegmans on Saturday

  • In honor of Earth Day today I wore my green, St. Patrick's Day shirt

I think my favorite photo is the one of you in green, Mary.  I switched us over to CFL bulbs last summer.  Leftovers have been my lunch of choice for years now.  We don't buy bottled water.  We use a filter on our refrigerator and my son brings water to school everyday in a reusable container.  We only shop using canvas bags.  I have them from several different stores I shop at.  I use them for grocery shopping, book shopping, farmers market shopping or shopping for office supplies.  I don't care.  I always have at least one or two in my car for those unplanned trips.  The rest stay in the house and go out only when we go grocery shopping.

count me as un-green. I see most of the green push having more to do with trying to control peoples thoughts and behavior then helping the environment.

Don't get me wrong if your happy being green then more power to you, just don't tell me what car i can drive or what temperature to set my thermostat.

I don't want CFL bulbs in my house. i don't want my kids near the mercury.

Dan--I understand and I respect your views. I drive a Cadillac for lots of reasons, one of which is my husband bought it for me.  Also, I like to be warm in winter.  I try to do my part in other ways, like CFL and composting.  I spoke on this topic at Toastmasters this afternoon.  After the meeting one of the attendees begged to disagree with me on most of my points., but we are still friends.  Thanks for commenting.

Heather--you are ahead of me with the reusable bags, but I will get my first one on Saturday. When we were kids my mother made her own reusable bags that she carried with her every shopping trip.  Kudos to your son carry a refillable water bottle.  His generation will inherit the earth.

Zane--It's never too late to go green.  Thanks for sending the sunshine east.

Hi Mary ~ Very interesting to read about your "green habits" over the years.  I've done a number of things mysefl for years but I have to say the constant drumbeat of the green mantra has made me step it up.  I think it's great if it makes people more and more apt to rethink some of their habits and choices.  A whole lot of incremental changes will really have an impact.

Elizabeth--I can't agree more.  If we all do just a  little it would add up to pretty BIG impact.  Writing & speaking about 'green' has made me want to do more.  Thanks for visiting my post.
