As we know, just about every day there is a new catch phrase or term being thrown around in the internet realm.  As a website optimizer (and Realtor), I thought I would take a step back and clarify some terms in this posting - starting with:

 Organic as it related to search engine results (Google, Yahoo, AOL, MSN, Ask.com etc):

Essentially the organic search engine ranking results are those that are displayed naturally (or organically), cannot be purchased but like the pay-per-click or sponsored search results that we see on the top of the page and on the right-hand column - rather they are the results that follow underneath in the main/center column.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=cape+ann+homes+for+sale

If you follow this link, you will see http://www.capeannrealestate.com/appearing in both the Sponsored link section on the top of the page (assuming the pay-per-click's have not run out for the day), and then appearing in the #1 positing on the organic search results.

Google doesn't put a number next to the organic results, but Yahoo does:

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=cape+ann+real+estate&fr=yfp-t-467&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8

In this case also the sponsored search results only appear in the left hand column.  This happens frequently when the pay-per-click bidding is not to a certain $$ level - but that's for another posting.
