When you work for a company that has employees spread all over the country, (not to mention members in every corner of the Country) events take place that, in a time gone by, would have seemed distant. But when one of your own sits on the doorstep of a very real and scary natural disaster, your thoughts and prayers are quickly focused to that person.

One of our Community Builders, Jeremy Blanton lives in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. If you haven't heard, Myrtle Beach has a large wildfire raging that has already forced the evacuation of thousands of people in the area. Over 15,000 acres have been burned and 50 homes have been destroyed. Jeremy reports that he is safe right now, as are his wife Katherine and baby daughter Isabelle, but wanted us to know that if he disappears online that he may have had to evacuate. It's OK buddy, we'll hold the fort down, you make sure your family is safe!

I have been on IM with Jeremy all day and unless the winds change in his direction, the fire is still about ten miles from his home. But take a look at the pictures on his blog and you can bet that ten miles has never been so close.

Jeremy isn't the only one of our members who are thoughts and prayers are with. We have quite a few members in that area. Please take a minute to stop by and let them know that we are thinking of them and that our prayers are with them.

Stay safe everyone!!

Do you care what I'm doing and thinking? (I can not for the life of me imagine why) If you do, you can find me on some of these places........but remember, if you are offended by anything you see or hear, I didn't force you to follow me!!:

Stay safe - and remember to get things by the door so if you have to leave you can grab photo albums and family treasures in a flash - when they say evacuate - get out! I learned this living through a CA wildfire. It can be a scary time - just be prepared. Thoughts and Prayers out to you and yours!

I have never been through anything like this in my life, but remember reading all the blogs about the wildfires in California that were written by blogs of ActiveRain members that I follow, and how scary it was for them.  Hopefully they will get these fires under control, before Jeremy and his family are in any further danger.

Bob... just left a comment on Jeremy's blog.. thanks for mentioning this, because I haven't really been on AR for a whole week.  His 2nd picture looks like it's from after a major war. And 10 miles is a lot closer than many think, especially when it comes to a fire of that size.  PS.. any of you coming out to the REbarcamp in Philly next month?

Jeremy,

I lived through the fire storm of 1998 in Flagler County, and we were evacuated. We were all sure that the house will burn but it survived.

It was a tough time, and I still remember it vividly, as if it happened just yesterday. Thick layer of ashes covering the driveway, no sun, difficulty breathing, and no hope...

Wishing you the best

Just a quick note before I try and get some sleep.  The fire is about 7 miles north of us.  Currently the winds are co-operating.  But, if they change directions we could be forced to evacuate during the night.  So far 69 homes have been destroyed, and over 100 damaged.  It is just under 20,000 acres burned now.  Thanks everyone for your thoughts & prayers.  I am exhausted and am going to try and rest in case I have a long night ahead!

I ache for everyone who is going through this right now.

One thing that amazed me (initially) when I heard about the wildfires was that in my mind this is a "wet" area.  I've been there several times to vacation and not once thought of the area as dry.  Mind boggling how these fires get started and spread so quickly...

Jeremy be safe.  Please.

Bob--Lots of these fires are coming too close for comfort. Such a scary situation...my heart goes out to Jeremy and his family and any friends affected. Something very similar happened to us two weeks ago! An idiot started fires in a ditch about 3 miles from my house on a very windy day. The wind was blowing in a different direction from our house but several friends were evacuated as 3000 acres burned. Scary as I had to drive right by the fire to pick up my kids from school, then were rerouted as they closed off the roads. It is so very frightening when it is a few miles from your home...All that smoke and fire and the fact that you have no control and can't go home. Scary!
