More Bad Economic News Every Day--Is this a good time to become a real estate agent?

I just read Number of people moving drops in Erie Times and I heard the same story repeated half dozen times on cable in last twenty-four hours. With more & more bad economic news every time we turn around--Is this really a good time to become a real estate agent?  Absolutely!!!

This is a Great Time to get a real estate license.  Let's look at the facts.

  • Fact #1   80% of the business is being done by 20% of the agents.
  • Fact #2  One third of the agents are leaving; one third just getting into the business; ONLY one third are working
  • Fact #3  The agents who have been in real estate for more than 5 years don't want to work as hard as they did when they first started in real estate and the current economy requires
  • Fact #4  The old guard don't want to embrace new technology

STATISTICS and MORE STATISTICS The turnover statistics have changed very little over the years.  Many people take real estate classes, but never sit for the real estate exam.  Others pass the test just to prove they can, but they never apply for a real estate license.  Of those who get a license most will be out of the real estate business within two years.  Truth is that most of those who get out within their first two years never sold a property.

I first heard these stats as a student in pre-license classes.  I promised myself that I would work and that I would succeed where others failed.  Out of a class of 40+ students in 1986 only two of us remain and that person only did real estate part-time for 20 years while working another job.

Fact #1  80/20  This may be too generous.  In reality it is probably 5% are making a good living and 95% are just there.

Fact #2  Which one third do you want to be in?

Fact #3  Some of the agents who got into real estate years ago are getting tired and don't really want to work as hard.  That is more opportunity for newcomers to scoop their business.

Fact #4  Tech will never replace agents, but agents with technology will replace those who don't have it

The answer is simple:  Follow your dream.  If you are determined to get into real estate and are willing to work hard, you will be successful where other fail.

Excellent points Mary.  I started last year, although I have another job which is my lifeline as far as money goes.  It gives me the money I need to get my name out there in real estate.  I specifically chose to get into Real Estate during this market because I'd rather start when things are slow...

When we hit our next boom, EXCELLENT, but what goes up must come down and having started in a market like this will help prepare me for the future.  I think many of the agents that started during the boom, could basically get clients just by being able to fog up a mirror, were shell shocked when the market declined and probably got out of the business...

Chandra--You said it so well.  Those agents are so upset that they have to work for business that pretty soon they will give up or just fade away.  You will be ready to take ove their business.  Good luck!

This is an excellent post. A number of great companies still around today were started during tough times. You buckle down, stay disciplined, work hard, and when the "good times" return your market share is that much greater.

We're starting to see the good times already. I'm a newbie too, just finishing my first year, but the dead market means there is a pent-up demand from those who have been holding on to see how things will go. I am working long days and I have seen three ends so far this month. Things are picking up, but you are right - the old guard approaches are not as effective as online work.

Mary, I love reading your post. Things are picking up, and it is a great time to be an agent. Those agents who don't want to work as hard are only making room for the rest of us. Look out here we come.

Jeff--You are so right. Buckle down, stay discipline and work hard never change and will always be the keys to success.

Bob--Sounds like your long hours are paying off and will continue to do so in the future.  You will be ready to meet that pentup demand.

Judy--I am glad the market is picking up in your area.  Yes, the old guard's inactivity leaves lots of room for the newbies & others who are willing to do what needs to be done.

Konnie--I love your description of yourself.  The little engine that could--keep going.  Congrats on earning 300,000 points.

Hi Mary...Information like this does make you feel like a survivor.

It is a great profession if it works out for you.  Yes, it takes work and determination and probably a bit of luck thrown in every once in a while.

Kate--Yes, it takes work and determination.  Luck helps, too, but as we know the luck doesn't help us if we don't work.  Thanks for visiting.
