Jeff Turner wrote a great post today about YEO- You Engaging Others.

The importance of engagement can not be overstated in the Social Networking arenas. We all have good intentions but when we find that we are not following through we need to reassess what we are doing online.

Twitter is such a powerful networking tool but it will backfire on you if you are not using it to engage but rather to just honk your horn announcing that you just wrote a post on Active Rain or on your outside blog.

The whole point of Twitter is to get others to follow you in order to build a relationship with you and you with them so that when they hear of someone needing to buy or sell real estate they will think of you and when you hear of someone needing the services of someone following you - you refer them.

They will not think of you if you don't add value to the community you are involved in, especially on Twitter. It appears very spammy when the only Tweets I get from you are those where you just wrote a post. But more important- what is the point of a one way conversation? How are you getting to know others if you are not paying it forward.

How can you pay it forward using Twitter?

  • You can answer a question.
  • You can retweet tweets you like that others tweet. That is a big compliment!
  • You can offer to help someone.
  • You can add to the conversations going on topics that interest you.
  • You can get involved with a cause on Twitter.
  • You can ask a question.

Twitter is not an ad machine. It is not a broadcasting network. It is a relationship network.

It is simple to just turn off your Twitter alerts in your Active Rain profile. Then turn them back on when you are ready to engage.

Good point Nestor and Katerina. What kind of phone do you tweet from?

Nestor and Katerina: I have to confess I have never Twittered. I'm not sure what is holding me back. I blog a few places, I maintain my website. I post here and on my local newspaper site. I'm on Facebook. If I had that 25th hour, I know I could do it!

I can't remember who wrote it, but I read a post a couple of weeks ago that talked about the twitter updates from AR.  Since I rarely log into twitter, I went in and turned mine off.  I would rather it have old information than page after page of 'new post from AR.." links.

Katerina - good point. A lot of us are new to the 'gizmo' and the idea of how it should be used...I understand why engagement is so imortant, nobody has time to spare on meaningless...

With smiles,

Bo

You are right, Katerina.  It's a wonderful tool and you can meet great people there.  However, they need to get something from the relationship for it to work.  I enjoy it and use it as often as time allows.  It works.

Katerina - an excellent follow-on to JEff's post. The other advatnage is that you can add a comment and linnk to relevant AR posts on Twitter and be more selective, rathen that everything going ther without any forethought.

Katerina - Those are very good points that need to be remembered.  Any good social technology can be misused which will drive people away!

I turned them off 2 weeks ago after Jeff's post. Although I tried to log onto Twitter right after I posted it didn't always happen. Anyway I need to go make sure it is still OFF as one slipped through right after I  changed it. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks everyone for reading these points and tips. I really appreciate each comment. I have been catching up on some much needed sleep so I have not been able to return each comment. I do read and reread each of your comments.

Maria- I rarely Tweet from my phone as I am seldom away from my computer. I have a home office and do most of my listings via email and phone from our home office. I have an assistant who does my running around.

But when I do go out of town, I Tweet from my Blackberry. I use Tweetberry application on my Blackberry.

BTW-  I have my Twitter notification from Active Rain on and it also feeds in from Friendfeed but I am very active on Twitter. I will post on how I am able to be active on Twitter. I don't do much on the weekends because I don't work on weekends. But the rest of the week I Twitter often.

I prefer manually tweeting about new posts. This way it lets you add a catchy teaser or ask a question to encourage people to click. And it's much more personal than machine-generated content.

John- That is a very good way to Tweet about your posts. Generate interest!

Carole- Just keep on going!

Eileen- I don't need much sleep! I slip when we are super busy but Nestor is such a huge help. Without him, I would not be able to blog like I do or social network like I do.

Katerina- I have a twitter account but don't use it much.  I am still trying to figure it out.  Seems like just tweeting about posts is not the most effective.  Thanks for the post.

Katerina.... this makes a lot of sense and I would agree with you 110%, that you need to engage others and not just post blogs. But I haven't had much time to engage people in the last 2 weeks. Then what do you do?  lol  Hire a double?
