How do you unwind?

Real Estate has been consuming my time from sunrise until way past sunset for weeks. Yesterday and today I made time to weed the garden beds and set out some annuals. My clients were all taken care of, the sun was out; it was a perfect time to get my garden in order.

Our local Sutherlands had Impatiens on sale for 89 cents a four pack or $3.99 per hanging basket. I got some of each. The lillies are perenials and multiply every year. If you're preparing your house to sell, weeding and planting some flowers is an inexpensive way to add curb appeal.

Here are the Impatiens with Cypress Mulch topping. Mulch helps with weed control as well as keeping the plants and topsoil from drying out during periods of drought. Cypress mulch is more repellent to bugs than cedar. Soil Pep, seen in the first photo can be used as a mulch if you like. I use Soil Pep to break up the clay dirt so prevalent in Missouri.

Transplants will need to be watered daily for ten days. After that, Impatiens are pretty hardy and bloom all summer long with minimal care. Kind of like our clients who need a lot of attention at first and then just periodic attention after the transaction.

marigold

Marigolds are said to repel bugs so I planted a few of those too. This variety is a simple, old fashioned yellow. There are many varieties in shades of gold, darker yellow, and even variegated red and orange.

Working in the garden is a great way for me to relax and renew myself so that I can give my clients 100%. How do you renew yourself?

Sounds like a great way to unwind, Maria.  My wife & I have made a garden this year, and can't wait to get out there and get working on it.  I didn't realize that about Marigolds and keeping bugs away. Learn something new every day.

I love love love to garden!  Great idea for a change of pace, thanks!  I might have to try the marigolds this year.  We have ginormous cockroaches and I could only hope for one more way to shoo them away!

I unwind be hitting the golf course, which fortunately I have been able to do probably 4 times in the last two weeks. It is such a nice outlet.

I'm not sure that marigolds deter cockroaches; they deter the liittle bugs that feed on roses, tomato, and other plants. Did you ever see that movie where all the people on earth are killed in a nuclear war and the cockroach survives?

Golf sounds nice too. Do you walk it or ride in a cart?

Maria - Gardening is a great way to relax and "smell the flowers". I go for a bike ride down to the beach every afternoon and then take photos of the sunset on the Banana River.

I love a pretty garden and one of my favorites for color are impatiens.  Unfortunately, I need a shadier spot for those to do well at my house.  Maybe I should plant a tree and create a bed for impatiens underneath.

I agree real estate can be time consuming, but working in the garden is so relaxing for the soul.

John, a bike ride to the beach sounds delicious! " If you're lucky enough to be at the beach, you're lucky enough."--from a friend's coffee mug. LOL!

Ann, yes plant a tree! Post a pic when you've got it in the ground. Or, take photos of your top 5 choices of trees for your yard and have us vote on which one to plant!

Thanks Rebecca!

Maria,

I think I unwind with AR and playing Spider Solitare on the computer! Reading is really the chill-out for me!

Connie, after reading contracts all day, I don't usually feel like reading any more paper but AR is different.

Lourdes, I will do that! The rain we've been having the last few days is making everything grow lush and green.
