Early morning at Realtor Care Day

Loaded down with tools, work gloves and safety glasses, at 7:30 am yesterday morning I met up with about 15 other Realtors at a modest home in our community.  After a brief introduction by our site captain about safety and the list of projects we were to complete, everyone put on their gloves and got right to work.

Our mission:

  1. Rip out the old, rotted side porch and build new one
  2. Build and install two crawl space doors
  3. Scrap old paint off of front and side metal railings and steps
  4. Paint
  5. Spruce up garden if time permitted

Realtors working on side porch

The ripping out of the rotten wood did not take long but we were not prepared for what we found underneath: 6-week old kittens, a dead rat, an old tire and a rather unpleasant smell!

It turned about that the homeowners cat had a litter of kittens. One of the Realtors was able to catch all 4 and took them to a local pet store who had agreed to find them homes!  While not on our list, this showed the kindness that prevailed all day.

Lunch time!

Our site was just one of 22 homes being fixed up during "Realtor Care Day" in the Charlotte/Lake Norman area.  Over 700 members volunteered.  We were assisted by physical inspectors and contractors who supplied their expertise when needed.

A homemade lunch was donated by a local church.  We were able to share much of it with the neighbors who stopped by to see what in the world was happening at their friend's home!  Our homeowner was an elderly woman who had volunteered for 30 years in the community and had lived her entire life in either this house or the one next door.  She was quite a character; entertaining us with stories and even a joke or two!

New wood nearly installed

Despite an unusually hot spring day of 90 degrees, we were able to complete all of our assignments and much more.

Some of the Realtors worked hard in the garden and even purchased bales of pine straw out of their own pocket.

Two other brave gals cleaned out the crawlspace.  There were jars of pickles and various other foods that were so old looking that we figured the crawlspace hadn't been cleaned in 50 years!

Group shot at the end of a long day

We were hot, tired and dirty but felt great.  Not only had we finished our original list and added to it, but we had brought some fun and good food to the neighborhood and particularly our delightful homeowner Barb!

From what I understand, the Charlotte Region Realtor Association is going to try to make this an annual event.  I hope so!

I have never been prouder to be a Realtor than I was yesterday.  Despite our own challenging financial times, 700 of us were out in our communities working hard to make those less fortunate's lives a little brighter!

If any of you would like to put on a Realtor Care Day or can share about your Realtor efforts to give back in your communities, please share them with us.  If we can compile a list of everyone's ideas perhaps we can encourage more to try to make a difference during these tough times.  It's so nice to have something positive to share about us Realtors!

Hi Diane,

I'm so impressed.  I think it is so important for REALTORS to give back to the community.  My leadership delelopment committee at our Board is teaming up with the PR committee to create the "Lighthouse Sanctuary Garden" for a local homeless shelter in our area.  We are a very affluent region and people refuse to believe there are homeless people in the area.

The shelter is in an industrial area with a very barren property.  The garden will give the folks there a quiet area to reflect and relax.  We have a landscaper who has donated his services and an architect drawing up the plans for free.

Our real estate board members can donate $20. for a bush, $500 for a bench or $1,000 for a mature tree.  We have brokerages that are challenging others.  Of course there were some agents who pooh-poohed the idea but you can't please everyone.

Congratulations to your group!!!!  I am passing this on to my committee at the Board.

Good Job Diane , Most of my agents are Master Masons. We get together ,the first Sunday of each month along with fellow Lodge members of Sharon Lodge # 327 AF&AM. We cook breakfast for the community of Mclean,Va. We provide 3-4 scholarships for under-grad and 2 for grad school from the donations.

Nice work.....nice post.

Most agents really don't deeply care about their community without publicizing their actions.

Tony:  Yes, I did feel good about helping out.  Although, I don't think I did that much...it was just too easy.  I guess that is what is so interesting.  It is not hard to make a big difference.

Jenny:  Thank you for sharing what you and your fellow REALTORS are doing.  Many times people do not realize how many are suffering so close to us and how relatively easy it is to make a difference!

Bill: That is great.  I love that you do this work every month.  What a gift to your community!

Tim:  There was a little bit of that yesterday but I chose to avoid the publicity stuff and just chisel away at 30 year old paint!

That is very cool Diane. Our office of 170 agents do a community service day every year. The hardest part of the process is finding a project that can accommodate 170 people. Last year we helped fix up a community youth center.

This is really neat Diane.  I would love to see a project such as this in our association. We as a small company are involved in lots of non-profit and that is very rewarding and heartwarming to us all. And it would be especially wonderful to assit folks with their homes.  I'm going to bookmark your post and share it with my Small Brokers Association Meeting.  In this economy I'm sure there are many , many folks who would be forever grateful for assistance.

Hi Diane,

Me again.  I am loving the great comments too and I have gone back and flagged your post for a feature.  All you guys who have commented should do the same thing.

I would love to hear more from other AR members what their Boards or Associations do to help out in their communities.

For those that don't, it will be a good reminder that there are those out there less fortunate who have no roof, or a very derelict one over their heads.

Thanks again for the timely topic.

I'm so sorry, one more thing lol.

A little honest publicity can go a long way for  the real estate  community to show that REALTORS aren't all bad guys or "money sucking vultures". Don't you love that term? I think in most cases REALTORS are helping out with geniune intentions and spirit.

Diane, this is such a wonderful thing to do. I know you felt proud. What an excellent idea to have a Realtor Care Day. I am going to bring it up to my board of Directors.

Last year we gave 50,000 to Habit for Humanity but this year we couldn't so this would be just as effective.

Diane, this is great.  Good for you. :)
A while back I fundraised, with some local REALTORS, for our local high school's hot lunch program and transit tickets for the children who can't afford either a lunch or tickets for public transit.  It was a huge success.  It felt great.
Lately, I have been helping food banks, as they are in desperate need of additional food.
Too many people need their services lately.
We all have to do our part.

Hi Diane,

Thanks for sharing..."Our site was just one of 22 homes..." all in one day? That's wonderful.

Is this something that your AOR or Board does on their own? I've not seen this exact program (as a REALTOR) previously. I'd love to learn more about it and in turn share it with my own community.

Most importantly you are sharing this among your peers, just stand back and watch your goodness grow!

What a great project!

My office had a "Homes You'll Love Tour" on Valentine's weekend as a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House.  We had 14 high end homes on the tour in pricey subdivisions and collected donations from those touring the homes.  We had door prizes, food, radio station remote broadcasting, activities for children, space jump, musicians, and we had a huge turnout.  The event was heavily advertised with radio, tv ads, and print ads.  It raised money for a worthy cause!

Diane, what a great idea!  I too would love to see something like this done on a national level.  It would go a long way to promoting a positive image of all realtors.  I'm just wondering how you chose the homes that you offered your services to.  Is this a project that you do on an annual basis or was it a first?

Our office regularly has drives for school supplies for needy kids in August, and coat/hat/gloves in the winter, plus raising funds for scholarships for the realtor community. But, nothing as ambitious as your realtor care day.

Diane-Great Post!  We are Keller Williams Realty believes in giving back to the community, In May Keller Williams Agents nation wide will be doing that very thing,  Our local office here is visiting a school and helping out, by reading to the children and doing different projects with them.

Also in May we are participating in and trying to raise money for Relay for Life, which I can't wait to do.

Also in May we are doing a community yard sale and all monies made will be donated to KW Cares which is distrubted out to help  children, seniors, and those in between. Victims of hurricanes, floods, wildfires, house fires, have received food, shelter, and clothing, and grants to help restore their homes and their lives. Associates faced with life altering accidents and serious medical illnesses have received financial assistance to help with co-pays and deductibles, medicines, therapies, and rehabilitation services not covered by medical insurance. We have helped those recovering from emotional illnesses.

When I lived in Nashville, our Association worked our tails off on Make a Difference Day.  It was each October.  We had many great Realtors that would spend the day helping others.  Sadly, my Association here in Huntsville doesn't participate in anything like this.  I'm trying to get that changed.  I may just do it in my office if I can't get the rest of them on board.  Heck with the rest of them.  It always feels so good to help others.

http://www2.statesville.com/content/2009/apr/25/realtors-unite-repair-blighted-houses/

It turns out there were 33 homes that were fixed up!

Erica, Good question.  The Realtor Care Day committee worked with Habitat for Humanity and other organizations to identify the best candidates for this project.  If you go to the links I provided in my last comment you will learn more about the process.

Our local board has built four Habitat for Humanity homes in our community.  We started a scholarship fund four years ago...the first year we gave one $1,000. scholarship this year we are giving five!  We had two REALTOR members pass away from cancer in 2007 and we memorialized them by naming the scholarships after them.  One agent was a very close friend of mine and one of the highlights of my career in real estate was being able to stand up at the high school where his boys attend at senior awards and present the Jim Wilhelm Memorial Scholarship.  We also participate in food bank, pack the bus, American Cancer Society relay for life and other programs.  We created a committee to put a more community minded face on our board about five years ago and the response from our membership has been overwhelming and heartwarming.  Giving back to the communities that have given so much to our industry through the years is the very least we can do!  Great post and congrats to you all for your work!

Archimedes Was Right

Before I get a lawsuit that claims I told you to run naked down the street, screaming",  I want to clarify something:

Yes, Old Archimedes is rumored to have done just that, when he figured out how to tell if a crown given to King Hiero II of Syracuse was, in fact, gold.

I'm even more impressed with his ground-breaking work with levers, almost 2,400 years ago.   He's the guy who said:

"Give me a place to stand and I will move the earth."

If he had a lever long enough and somewhere to stick it, there was no weight that he could not lift.

Archimedes is my man!

I wish he could have been my real estate investing partner, because he "gets it".  He understands that heavy lifting is no way to go through life.

The way to get rich is to leverage your time.  Two great ways to do that are:

1.  Buy multi-family properties.  Just one deal can set you up for life, if you follow the right system.  That's not what I'm focused on in this email, though, because I want to discuss this...

2.  Don't manage these properties yourself.  Get a property manager to do that FOR you.  Yes, that can mean less initial profit for you because the manager must be paid.  But if that person is good, he or she will earn you MORE profit through professional management of your property.

It took me years to discover the ins and outs of this process, but now it works like a charm.

I won't sugar-coat this area for you.  I'll tell you the good, bad, and ugly that I experienced.  You'll be investing with your eyes open.  I will also tell you how to minimize the "bad and ugly" part, and thus maximize your profits.

Don't bother making all these mistakes yourself, unless you're just a glutton for punishment.  And DON'T settle for mediocre profits because you aren't sure how to invest by remote control.
