Peaks to Prairie

By
Education & Training

Peaks to Prairie is a triathlon that takes place at the end of April of each year and starts at the base of the Beartooth Mountains just South of Red Lodge, Montana.

The event consists of 8.8 miles of running, 43 miles of biking, and 22 miles of kayaking.  There are athletes that compete in all 3 events (true triathlon) while others form a team and each person of the team takes on one event.  The competitors can also participate in a duathlon that covers the first two legs only.

The run starts beneath the beautiful Beartooth Mountains and goes through the town of Red Lodge where residents and spectators cheer for the runners.  The run-bike transition takes place near the First Interstate Bank located in the northern part of town.

The cyclists hop on their bikes as soon as the runner from their team (or he/she) crosses the finish line near First Interstate Bank.  The cycling route goes on Highway 78 from Red Lodge all the way to Riverside Park, a park just south of Laurel (less than a mile south of Highway 90) with access to Yellowstone River.  The cycling route is mainly flat and the cyclists ride the 43 miles through farm and ranch country.

The boaters get in their kayak and start paddling on Yellowstone River once the cyclist from their team (or them-self) crosses the finish line at Riverside Park.  The boaters will paddle 22 miles to the finish line at Coulson Park in Billings.

The race is unique as it treats runners, cyclists, and boaters to breath-taking scenery, plenty of fresh air and Montana's last, best habitats.

The following is a photo I took near the finish line of the running event at last year's Peaks to Prairie (April 27, 2008).

All the way in the background is Red Lodge Mountain.  On top of the hill, you can see a nice looking custom log home with a green roof which is currently (as of April 25, 2009) up for sale for $695,000.  It has 3,768 square feet of living space, 5 bedrooms, 4 baths and comes with 3 acres of land.  It has a great view of Red Lodge and of the Mountains.  If you or anyone else you know may be interested in this unique property, please don't hesitate to contact me for more details.

Paul,

The kayaks will be going downsteam from Laurel to Billings.   I have attached a map below.   Laurel is 47 miles North of Red Lodge and 12 miles West of Billings.

Map showing Yellowstone River

The following is a description of the Yellowstone River taken from www.visitmt.com.

The Yellowstone is the last free flowing river in the lower 48 states. From its headwaters in Lake Yellowstone downstream 670 miles to the Missouri River in North Dakota, the Yellowstone River flows as it has for centuries, in its natural state, undamed and untamed. Clear, cool swift and challenging it offers fishermen and river runners some of the best water Montana has to offer. To fishermen, its blue ribbon waters are known world round for an abundance of big trout.

The 22 miles of kayaking will take the average kayaker about 3 hours to complete in good weather conditions.  We are looking at a cloudy day and a temperature of around 31 degrees Farhenheit (well below the average temperature for this time of the year).   Last year's results show that it took anywhere between 2 hours 15 minutes and 4 hours 20 minutes to complete the kayaking portion of the race.

Thanks for visiting this post and have a great Sunday!
