Warm Waters of the Atlantic

I am outside my office in the hallway of an oceanfront condo-hotel resort, where our office is on the first floor. I know quite a number of condo-owners, and we usually say "hi" to each other and exchange some niceties.

Tom is going to the ocean. He just drove in from up north. I am asking him whether he is going to swim. He confirms, he already swam in the morning.

It is April in Daytona, so is the water warm? He energetically nods. His friends also say that it is very warm.

But I already know that you gotta be careful who you ask. It is 71F and for me it is far from warm. For people coming from up north it is warm. They may not get that temperature of the water in the ocean even in July.

Here a warm water is something over 80F.

When I came from the Arctic, for me warm was if there was no ice. Tell me about being spoiled

Heehee!  You ARE spoiled!  Seriously, 71 is NOT warm when you're swimming, that's for SURE!

Have a great Sunday Jon!

Debe - I do not swim in 71 degree water simply because I will have plenty of days when the temperature will be over 80F. It is just another couple of weeks. And in the pool we have a sign that we CANNOT swim if the temperature is 110F. Actually, it is a bit too warm, even for us, spoiled Floridians.

I remember when we moved to Florida, and the water in the pool was 80, my wife was complaining that it was too warm and not refreshing. Now, I can't get her in the water unless it is over 80F.

Did we really lived above the Arctic Circle? Or it is getting old? Or it is getting old in Florida?

Funny but, my hubby won't swim in under-80 degrees either!  I think we're ALL spoiled!  LOL

Jon - you are getting old and spoiled at the same time.  Happens to the best of us:-)  We water-skied in a PA lake with the water temps at 64 degrees... That was 7 years ago.  I am off to the beach here now, and won't swim - way too cold; there'll be plenty of pale-skinned touristos splashing in the waves though.

Inna - When I was in the Arctic, I once was talking to a general, who just came from a Cuba, where he was as a tourist. He was telling us that nobody was swimming and they gathered to look at those crazy Russians, who were enjoying the warm waters of the Caribbean. He said that the water was 25C, and we were all laughing as you hardly get 25C on the Black Sea in July.

To us it was a joke. Now I understand, that this was not a joke.
