MegaphoneOkay...so the ones that will actually read this are probably not the guilty parties but I have to stand on my soapbox for a minute. I have noticed a number of folks who are posting simple questions or two sentence paragraphs as their blog. Is this some new phenomenon here? I know that not every post needs to be long but this is ridiculous. I read three in a matter of 5 minutes that were nothing more than a couple of sentences strung together.

There is also quite a bit of advertising going on here in the rain, most of which is unwarranted. Again, I encourage people to have their own voice but please do not make Active Rain your platform for pay per click sales or quick mortgage schemes.

Here's a newsflash......you are not showcasing your ability or knowledge in a three sentence paragraph. My 6 year old daughter can do that. If you are blogging to get points, here's a thought: Actually write about something interesting. Write about a topic of controversy or something worth discussion and you might just get featured. If racking up the points is what you're after, there are a number of ways to do it. Work on your profile, invite others, post to localism, take photos of your area, join contests, comment on member posts and get involved here on AR. By doing any of these things, you will also gain the respect of your peers, your public and most of all, PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS.

That is what most of us are trying to do, reach our client. Do you really think a client is going to choose you after reading the two sentences you managed to think up? Come on. You will get much more respect if you blog about something you know, make it interesting, add some pictures (not too many) and spend more than 3 minutes on it. Also, spellcheck your work. Nothing says I-D-I-O-T like poor spelling. The little check mark with ABC above it is your friend. Use it.

There are many, many great writers and bloggers here on the Rain. Mike Mueller has started a group called Practice Here that can really help those of you just starting to blog. Check it out. Active Rain Newbies is also an excellent resource for first time bloggers and new Active Rainers.

As professionals, we all want to maintain the integrity of this site to our respective businesses. Please do your part to produce quality content and not just blog for points.

Kelly, you are right on.  Thank you for giving back to the Active Rain community, and being a shining example of quality content.  This smells like a feature, to me, but even if a gold star is not on the horizon, inclusion in the week in review is.  I am compiling it this week, and you are certain to be in my top 25 with this one.

Absolutely dead on.  I just heard from another ActiveRainer about someone who had posted the exact same blog 7 times to get points.  Pretty cheesy if you ask me.

I really enjoy the many things I learn from the people on this site.  To open up a blog with a catchy title only to be disappointed with them not really saying anything can be very upsetting.

Hi Kelly, Thanks for posting this. I post some short ones sometimes but I try to make them under 50 words or after I have done my 10 for the week.

I see what you are saying...great post as always!

Thank you for the insight.  I'm a newbie and often wonder how people come up with topics.  I just talk about where I live and ask questions that (hopefully) get answers.

Thanks again.

Kelli,  Those posting for points don't really understand the true value of a blog.  You are so right when you say we should be espousing our knowledge... what makes us an expert and the obvious professional to choose.  If your points are getting you rankings in the search engines, the consumer will be sorely disappointed with the content and this will, ultimately, be a detriment to the poster.

Kelly,  I agree, but I try to keep in mind, it takes time to feel comfortable in writing and the more you read the better you feel passionate about what you feel and can articulate it better.

The advertising is annoying but I think they eventually they get the picture because not many comments on the ad posts.  When you give you receive. Posting a little paragraph and then never commenting on others posts is not really what AR is about and they are not experiencing AR to the fullest.

Kelli, Thank you so much for posting this! I agree with every point you made. This should be required reading for all new members. And Steven 7 posts! I was upset when I saw one that was posted three times. I hope they flagged them. I did and they lost the points for it. Hopefully that will stop them from doing it again. Thank your for including the pay for clicks. I saw one today and can we say "tacky"? I don't think it belongs on Active Rain. Kudos Kelli!

Kelli,

They will only get what they put into it. Then they will cry that they need more referrals.

Steven- I hope someone flagged it. 7X? Ridiculous. Thanks for dropping by : )

Stephanie- Thank you!

Mike- Too funny! Everytime I read this it makes me laugh. Thanks : )

Denise- You are doing fine. Thanks for commenting : )

Carol- Well said : ) Thanks.

Missy- You have more patience than I do. I think most of the bloggers I'm referring to are well aware of what they are doing but just have no regard for the professionalism of this platform. Thank you for your comment : )

Ashley- Nice to see you here. Thanks for your support and your comments. I appreciate them : )

Kelli,

Great post!  I totally agree with you.  I am still trying to find my voice on Active Rain.  So far I am just writing about my local area because that is what I know best.  This type of networking site will ultimately benefit most from those who not only take but give back as well.

Kelli,

It is funny that you mentioned this, I was talking with a colleague earlier today, we were discussing AR and we both noticed that a lot of posts did not serve any purpose whatsoever except to give someone points.  I think that people need to understand that this has the ability to help people with knowledge, but when people start reading rubbish, they tend to leave.

Posts are suppose to be of interest or to help inform others, not a way of building points...

Monitors can't be everywhere - we need to report posts that are advertisements or duplicates or multiplicates. There's a flag available!

I am not sure the flags work. There were some blatant posts a couple weeks back that were pure ads, and the same one was posted five times in two hours. That does not mention that the same thing was posted three times the week before. Blatant attempts and points with pure ads. I flagged them, as did another party, but they are still there.

Rita- Hi there and thanks for stopping by to comment : )

Gary- Sadly, some of these folks have not learned what a powerful tool AR really is and the attention it draws on Google, Yahoo & MSN. Thanks for your comments : )

Lori- Me too. Thanks for your comment : )

Thesa- You're so funny. Thanks and let's have lunch soon : )

Sharon- That's a great point. We all need to do our part. Thanks for your comment : )

Rosemary- Thanks : )

Steven- Not sure about the flag issue but I empathize with your point. Thank you : )

Kelli, on target!  It's sometimes difficult to come up with quality content, but it gets easier as we go on reading more blogs with quality content.  Helps get the juices going!  Thanks for your bold step forward!

Sometimes you have good ideas but putting them into words that you feel someone else will enjoy reading and getting something out of what I'm saying seems hard.  But I won't give up.

Kelli, I rated your post a 5.  Too many members seem to be missing the point of why we're here.  It isn't merely to accumulate empty points.  These annoying posts dilute the value of AR both to members and the public.

I totally agree with what Carole Williams said. It's one thing to accumulate the points and get higher in the list. But consider what the public will think when they actually read the garbage that is posted. Who would want to actually do business with someone so shallow!

Kelli, your post said exactly what a lot of us are thinking. Good job!

Kelli - Within days of being "active" in the rain I started getting frustrated because I was hungry to learn.  It seemed there were some throwing "crumbs" for points vs meat for growth....okay, sorry if I"m offending anyone reading this....I realize in the beginning it's so easy to get caught up in the point thing, but after a few days it should subside.  We should be givers as well as receivers...

Joddie I agree, but I always keep in mind although I may not like what I am reading and may think it is garbage, someone else will come along and get something out of it.  Since we are all at different places in our lives, our thinking and our careers -- I think never not write a post because you think it won't help at least 1 somebody.

I have read so many and I find myself reading the same things over and over on certain subject matter, but thing is I might not have jotted it down the first time I read it, I may not have let it soak in but then when I see it again I might be ready to entertain that thought.  You just never know.

This is why I am loving being a part of the AR network.

Enjoy this day and be safe.

Being new to active rain I know what your referring to, I ran across a blog with a lot of jokes posted on it. That was disappointing and obvious they were just building points.....I enjoy reading the info from all area's of the country.

Thank You

Renae, there is a humor section.  Its possible that the jokes just got misguided to the wrong groups.  The AR Humor want only jokes.  And they get points for them.  So there is a place for everyone's emotion or thoughts, it seems.

As this is my 11th? comment today... I'll do what MANY, MANY do on AR and just say

"Great post"

Will we see a follow-up blog on 'commenting for points'?
