Nearly four decades ago, Americans stood up to protect human health and the environment.

And what started with some 20 million Americans 39 year ago, will engage more than a billion people across the globe tomorrow.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day, celebrated April 22, is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 to bring awareness to how humans are impacting the environment in which they lived.

Today, the burgeoning GREEN movement offers more to Americans than just the next great economic opportunity for us to prosperas a nation: It is the best opportunity for us to"pay it forward" to the future generations of inhabitants on our planet.
