Without risks there would be wondering, the ‘what ifs',  no growth, no change. Without risks there would be a stagnant, unproductive, bored and lethargic life. Without risks I would have no in between. There would be life and death and no in between.

And it's what I do in between is what really matters. The legacy I will leave behind.

There was a time in my life where I pushed passed that comfort zone and had overcome the fear of trying something new. In my case it was detrimental in turning my life around because that old way of thinking...the beliefs I held about my own self were just getting me NO where.

I became a totally different person in the process.

I would have no place in the Real Estate Industry if I did not RISK trying something new and everything below is everything I did not do before.

  • I went to Real Estate School at a point in my life where I was drained from helping people who did not want to help themselves (I worked for a Family Law Attorney and a Structured Program for many years each) I took a risk and went to school.....a whole different language to say the least.
  • I am a Realtor -Associate with Century 21 Liberty Homes in Mililani, Hawaii in Honolulu County. (Independent Contractor) I took a big risk to try something new as I had not ever sold anything prior. I found out it has more to it than selling and the core of it is "thinking and doing in the best interests of my client"
  • I also work for Century 21 Liberty Homes (Office Support, Web Support, Property Management Support and you name it...I am it.....2.5 days a week. (Employee) I took a risk to do the ‘other side' of Real Estate and have conquered the separation between my sales and my office duties.
  • I also assist another agent with files (File Support...because I like organization and paperwork.....he doesn't,,,,and he's my friend) I took a risk to take on more....and honored that I am trusted for this job....as with many other agents who have other jobs that they refer to me or ask me to help them co-list and/or assist them with their buyers/sellers.
  • I excelled in learning about computer technology and started by using software programs and learning by trial and error. I just completed my third website and I am very proud of this one>>>  www.hawaiihomesmarket.com I took many risks to put myself out there....and finally get it right.....and did it all on my own.
  • I am a stickler for keeping a very clean and maintained pc and keeping my pc upgraded. I don't like a zillion icons on my desktop and I don't like a zillion programs running in the background. I took a risk to learn because it saves time!
  • I blog and have been blogging since being introduced to ActiveRain in March of 2007. I wasn't too cyber psychology savvy but I have learned.  I took a risk in trying something new in the way of marketing myself and it has proven to be the best investment I have made. www.cheesemanhomes.com
  • I learned by trial and error that online communication may not be the same for others as it is for me. I have learned to risk talking to others at my own expense of making a fool out of myself, learning to let go and move on from personality conflicts or the rewards of making meaningful and lasting relationships or gaining a client. At least I took that risk instead of wondering or making up my own conclusions about someone I had not even talked to.
  • In January 2002 I took a risk and married Gary. That was the biggest risk and the most rewarding to date. :)

I have no control over anything in this world.....except myself.

I continue to take risks in everything I do every day. I read, I research, I ask questions and I LISTEN. Not everything will work for me but I sure can use what I need and throw the rest away.  I understand that I need to take care of self  first.....for with that insight into the depth of my own self worth there is knowledge in knowing that everything else will follow.

I LISTEN. For with an Open Mind there is room to allow other ideas in.

I take risks to try something new.

Therefore, I grow.

Risks ARE Gifts.

Hi Sally... What a wonderful post.  They say that the higher the risk the higher the reward... it seems like your high risks have paid off handsomely!  Your outlook clearly plays a significant role in your success story.

Sally, I'm always amazed at the amount of risk that people take coming into the real estate business.  Perhaps they don't even know the amount of risk they are taking!  And, we continue to take risks every day.  I know a lot of agents who are still hanging in there despite enormous debt and threat of foreclosure on their homes.  I've never been one who likes to take risks, but I know I have a lot of talent and hate to waste it on an employer.  I just can't be a wage earner, so despite my low tolerance for risk-taking, I took the plunge first into management consulting and then later in life as semi-retirement career, real estate.  I hate risk, but I do love the adventure of real estate - meeting new people, new challenges, new situations, so much to learn in terms of skills and knowledge.  I don't think I could ever grow tired of this profession.  I can see that you take risks, just in terms of how open you are in the way you write.  Your openess and honesty are what draw me back to your blog time and time again.

Hi Sally, I love your honesty about yourself! And I love that you keep your computer organized. I may not be organized on my desk, but my computer is a different story.

You have done great things, the rewards are higher as the risk increases, that's for sure.

Great post as always!

Succeeding in life is about taking risks. Most people that don't take risks don't end up being that productive in life.

Sally we do have to take risks in life, but good thought out risks.  The risks I take today are much different than the ones I took when I was much much younger.  Come to think of it I still don't know how I survived those risks :) :)

Sally,

I listened to someone on the radio today saying that he didn't want to live a "safe" life avoiding as much risk as possible, because it would be a very boring life.  That resonated with me, and then I read your post.  Wonderful!

Woo Hoo, A wonderful post and as I read it I saw some of the same things in myself , though the pc stuff, I'll just leave alone. You are so right, it is all about stepping out and risking it all. But along the way you made good decisions and they gave you the boundaries and you had the enthusiasm for life to stay centered through it all. Risks until they pay off also can be very disconcerting and I am sure that occasionally you also had doubts. But overcomeing those doubts and moving forward with work and sticking with it will provide you many more rewards and they are probably just beginning to reveal themselves. Having endured those risks and times of uncertainty also now provide insurance that you may never have to experience them again. You make me proud to be your friend and you deserve every special and wonderful happiness that life can reveal to you. You made it girl! You and Gary together made it happen and no one could be more delighted than I.

HA!  Real estate agents risk thier very economic security every single transaction.

That is the nature of contingent fees.

Wonderful article Sally.

I love reading your posts.  They convey such a positive attitude and warmth.  I also agree about risk taking...like the saying goes "no risks, no reward".  I too have and continue to take many risks.  As Realtors, our business and financial security is at risk. Like you said if you see yourself sitting still and not progressing in a positive direction, you need to make some changes.

Great post!  All my life, risk has seemed like a negative thing, but being a relatively new owner of a Brokerage in a languishing market, my whole perspective has changed.  My wife and I had this conversation last night and risk has become very exciting and the sense of accomplishment following that risk is incredible!  It's a risk everytime I bring on a new agent, a risk everytime we put our reputation on the line, a risk when we step out to represent a client who is dependent on our expertise.  When the dust settles, the risk is a small price for the incredible reward.  That is why I love this business!

Sally, I see myself in a lot that you posted. It's true that to be independant there are risks to be taken. I make quick and sometimes life changing decisions, but I wouldn't trade for any of my yesterdays.

Good for you. Taking Risk is what makes this a great country.  On the flip side, when I was younger I used to say, "When in doubt do something stupid."  I take smart risk now.

Scott: Thanks...and you're absolutely right!  We ....in this business....get over the fear of the unknown and strive to make headway in this industry.

Lizette: It's what we have gone through yesterday that make us who we are today. :)

Gene: Exactly....we take risks that will benefit us....not cause us to self destruct :)

Sally,

I'm fairly new to AR with so much yet to learn....  I loved your article and wanted to let you know.  There is a book which is very appropriate called "Who Moved My Cheese" that, for me, epitomizes your comments.  The Real Estate Market is ever changing and to be successful we have to be willing to risk and change.

I used to take a lot more risks, like the time I moved to Honolulu with no job!  Or a year later, decided to come back to the mainland...with no job!  And then to Nashville with no job!  And then to Texas with no job!  I always felt things would work out and they did.  I am anxious to read your new book that you participated in with others.  You have done well in your risktaking!

No risk no rewards.  The key is to take intelligent and measured risks and to go crazy with working to succeed once you take that risk.

Sally - one of the wisdoms you mention in your essay on risk is that of letting go of the fear of making a fool of your self -- of pushing beyond and just being  who you are, sarying your thoughts and truths as they are.  People often describe that as a risk, and I guess it can be framed that way -- and haven't you found that living in that state of mind is the most liberating way to live?  I liked the post a lot, and think risk can also be called living into the challenge of being alive! thanks.
