HERE'S THE LINK TO THE NEW MAP
http://flutracker.rhizalabs.com/

By now you are probably aware the WHO (World Health Organization) has raised the alert for this flu to Level 4.  There are 6 levels of alerting, raising the bar to Level 4 is not good news.
UPDATE:  4/30/09,  WHO HAS GONE TO LEVEL 5
UPDATE: 5/1/09, Mexico has delisted the number of deaths from 168 to 12....HUH???

Click here to read about the WHO and see and understand their pandemic alert chart

The same precautions you would take for any type of influenza apply here as well.  Most important is covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze combined with lots and lots of hand washing.  There is a Google map which is updated with each new case of Swine Flu.  Keep an eye on your area and if it appears and starts spreading please take it seriously.

Remember the Influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed between 40 and 50 million people.  It's estimated that 25 million were killed in the first 25 weeks.  Some estimates have the number of deaths as much as 100 million....so I suppose they don't really know, but it's a lot.  Not just the old and infirm, most victims were healthy young adults.  Please be careful and act responsibly....stay home if you're not feeling well.

Keep this map handy and refer to it often

HI Gail, as for me, one can not be too safe.  If I must wear a mask, I will, If I must stay home a couple of days, I will.  Although the news is saying the flu is very curable if treated early, why chance that, just take precautions and be safe to begin with.

Excellent.  The map link is great.

I began to feel poorly Sunday.  I wondered if I was coming down with Swine Flu or a cold.

Then my nose itched and I sneezed.

GOOD NEWS!

I have a cold.

Gail - Thanks for posting this information.  We are having a NGA Hooters Golf tournament at our club this week with 200 young men who literally travel the world staying in our homes while they compete.  I know they have come in contact with someone who is infected.  In addition, a private school in a nearby town is closed because the students have been on vacation to Mexico.  One young person has been hospitalized and they are waiting to find out if it is that particular strain of the flu. Needless to say, it is all around us so we all need to take precautions to stay healthy!  And of course, we all have clients - many of whom travel and may have been exposed.  Hope this thing passes soon without being any more serious than it is!

Sometimes I get the impression that our maker is really disappointed with our behavior and is trying to get our attention. Thank for the link to the map ... I'll make sure to keep an eye on it.

Good Morning Everyone.....I am SO HAPPY that this information is helpful.  Being someone with upper respiratory issues I take events like this very seriously as the infection could be fatal.

Some of you who commented do have cases in your areas, I'm really sorry...please be careful.  Make sure your friends and family are aware as well.  Pass the map along to everyone you care about.

Norma, so far there are no cases of Swine Flu in Florida but it is heading down the coast, where several have been reported in South Carolina....it's just a matter of time.

The government has released massive stores of Tamiflu, and if caught early we can greatly reduce the severity of it's impact.

If you're having trouble with the map loading here is the direct link - good health to all of us!

Will it be a pandemic or will it be like the Bird Flu... a lot of thunder?  I have a feeling it will fizzle long before it becomes the catastrophe it is being reported as.  Of course, we all need to take steps to safeguard ourselves, but it also isn't a reason to freak out.

News media sensationalism. There will be no PANDEMIC. You heard it here first.

No, I do not remember, before my time on this earth.

School department should have been on top of it from the gitgo. School vacation last week in my area and the parents should have been alerted and any children that went to Mexico should have been told to stay home. And that is a no brainer.

Gail, I am an avid hand washer as when I get sick, I stay sick for long periods of time.  I get a flu shot every year since I got the flu about 3 years ago.  I got sick on super bowl Sunday and was still coughing the following July!  This year I did not get the flu but I did get two serious colds that lasted for weeks.  I am still coughing from a cold I had exactly 4 weeks ago tomorrow!  Very frustrating.  This is scary stuff, this swine flu, and I tend to not want to think too much about it, but I thank you for the info.

Thanks for the map.  I think the media has been both helpful and harmful.  it is good to know about the dangers and take precautions.  However, when we look at the numbers of cases and deaths compared with even the normal flu - I worry that people panic too much.  There was one New York legislator wanting to close the border to Mexico. I wonder if he now feels that the border to New York should be closed.  Politics and fear can be more harmful than the flu.

Billie...The only thing I heard yesterday from a CDC Doctor, is that the Swine Flu could possibly be milder in the US because of past flu shots we've had.  There is nothing in this year's shot geared to this particular flu.  We're in a wait and see pattern with much yet unknown.  How are you feeling?

TLW--There's no vaccine but supposedly Tamiflu can lesson symtoms if you've already contracted it, but you have to get to your doctor fast. Rots of ruck if everyone comes down with it all at once.

I'm concerned but not paniced.  I also remember the over blown fear in the 70's that cost more lives than the flu did.  Health services are now better, especially in this country.  Mexico's problems may be related to poor health services.  Many people die from the flu every year.

I am not putting down your concern.  I do thing we need to keep some perspective.

Hello Gail,

Thank you so much for taking this illness seriously!

I became quite concerned when I heard the Mexican tourists were sick in an Orlando hospital after visiting the Disney Parks.  We live in Fort Myers, 4 hours south  of Orlando and have a school field trip planned next week, My husband and son are scheduled to go with 45 6th graders. I am not sure what to do. Do I go not worry and send them or do I cancel their places and say no they can not go?

Gail I am truly thankful to you for educating us on the latest news about this concerning situation.

Gene...I think right now most of us feel as you do, concerned but not panicked.  Of course those who are more susceptible worry a little bit more.

Hi Kimberly....I think by next week we should have the facts on the Disney tourists.  If there is a real problem, the school will probably cancel on their own.  Good luck with your decision.
