Use the word counterFor Search Engine Optimization knowing what words you are using and how many times that word is used is very useful. Using a word too many times can show up as spam if your overall page word count is not very high. If you don't use certain words or associated words then your associated word count might be bad for the subject you are talking about. Search engines won't be as likely to pick up on what subject or information you want a page to be known for if you don't use the right keywords.

I decided today to create a word counter so I could know easily and effectively if I was spamming words or if I wasn't using them enough. You want your keywords to be used a lot but not 20+ times when the content of your page is under 400 or 500 words. If you would like to use this little word counter tool I have made it available - it is version 1.0 so be kind. But if you have any recommendations on how it could be more effective I will try to implement them if the task is not too complex =)

This tool is also effective if you want to be a "good" writer and not repeat words or if you are just looking for a basic word counting program.

Enjoy the Word Counter

Abraham I had 18 occurances of the words I wanted to optimize out of 524 - is that good or bad?

Nice idea, the ticket is the recognition of the proper usage of the correct words.

Pretty cool idea.  But I'll stick with the art of blogging rather than go to the science of blogging.  It's fun now.  I don't want to make it a job!  Good work.

Abraham....  very interesting. My question is how do we know what search engines will pick up or not?  Overall, this is a great tool. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Abraham,

Can you tell us more about how many times your key words should come up on the main page, as well as if placement on the page has any affect. I have some words that I would consider longtail words which come up 2 or 3 times on my main page, and others which are like town names that come up 3 or 4 times.

Is there a resource that you can direct us to which would be helpful in this regard?

Thank you,

Wow - thanks guys - appreciate the feedback

Cyndee - The frequency of using the tool is up to you. I use it when I write a long blog or maybe I want to optimize multiple words and it lets me see how I'm doing. 18 out of 524 is not bad - Make sure you have good words that relate to the topic though to support using your keywords that much. Once you get above 20 - I'd say you've made your point to the search engines and more is starting to be overkill.

I got the idea from prweb's SEO tool that I thought was handy. They have a very similar tool for their press releases.

Thanks Abraham. It seems like a good resource. I would like to add that there is no definite threshold for too many/not enough but this tool is a good way to get an idea. The main point I have is that you should make your content natural. If you have content that seems to have a higher percentage of your keyword but is done because it makes sense and is a natural fit it will generally be OK. If you have weird and nonsensical placement of keywords or just lists of keywords that is going to cause a problem.

Jeff - Thanks for the award I'm honored. Search engines pick up on everything - it's just the more you place certain keywords on a page the more important that page becomes for those keywords or phrases - but when you over do it search engines recognize it as spam.

James - If you have major keywords in a really long page - up to about 20 times your doing good. For minor keywords 5 is a good number to have.

These statements are mostly speculation from what I've heard but I say them because I do have a lot of experience in SEO but no one knows absolutely how search engines work fully.

Check out these links - google talks about these issues:

Jeff - Good idea - would be good to have a few seo tools on blogging mechanisms such as WordPress or even AR.

Since this has had such good response I have added breakdowns of multiple word phrases as well.

No need to stuff keywords, each page you optimize should be targeted for 3 or 4 words.  You only need to say each keyword once or twice.  Its all about the ancor text that you are getting your backlinks from.  take a look at my site bellingam real estate.  each page is optimized for three to for keywords.  If you try to do more than that the content sounds spammy.

Not exactly - I took a look at your site and tried to find it by searching your keywords and didn't find it on Google. I only looked through the first few pages of results but as an SEO consultant I have found you do need your keywords on your page more than 3 or 4 times. I do agree though that your anchor links have a LOT to do with where you place. Also the content on the page where you are being linked from matters.

No problem - I've also found it useful to see what keywords other websites are using that are ranked high. Gives you an idea of how search engines see their sites.

Well that was fun. I used your word counter to check the words in the comments.

I just had to make sure everyone got 25 points for their comments. LOL.
