On the way to sandy beachSafety comes first! You wouldn't think there would be a lot to know about safety while visiting or just recently relocated to the islands, right? Wrong! There are safety precautions to take into consideration while you are taking a tour to the volcanoes on the Big Island, browsing, hiking, swimming in the ocean and all around galavanting around our islands so you stay safe!

Following are links to websites with pertinent information for safety precautions you can take for certain weather and natural conditions while living in Hawaii:

  • If you travel to the island of Hawaii, otherwise known as the "Big Island" and want to peek at our erupting volcanoes you may want to check out this website Hawaii National Park Volcanoes Safety Tips
  • You may also like to read May 22, 2007 story on "VOG" because our volcanoes brought the hazy air from the Big Island's Kilauea Volcano to Maui and O'ahu. There are also tips for people who have chronic breathing problems and what to do.
  • We have many hiking trails and surely you would not want to fall off a cliff or get stranded so please refer to this brochure Hiking Safely in Hawaii
  • Our Hawaii Land and Natural Resources Division has this webpage dedicated for Hawaii State Park Safety Tips and also includes Civil Defense Warnings poisonous plant and sun exposure protection information as well. (our sun can burn ...and it may not even feel like it ...in a matter of minutes!)
  • We have beautiful beaches, sunsets over the ocean and wonderful views to behold with crashing surf at sunrise. Many visitors are unaware or are not prepared for nature's wonders to put a damper on life when safety precautions are not met.  Please take the time to browse our Hawaii Beach Safety site!
  • Check out this site as well Hawaii State Government Ocean Safety Not only do we have to watch for ocean undertows but we also have times where there will be a swarm of jellyfish 8-10 days after a full moon on the west and south shores.
  • We are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and have weather changes from all directions. Keep watch on the weather for tropical storms, high surf advisories and all around weather changes on this website University of Hawaii's Department of Meteorology (weather tracking on anything and everything!)

So, please take precautions for your own personal safety while visiting or living on our beautiful islands and you will have an experience of a lifetime!

May 18, 2007 News story on Lava delta lost 23 acres in latest collapse (a chunk of Kileauea Volcano on the Big Island crashed into the ocean. Quote:  Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory had originally estimated the May 10 lava delta collapse at East Lae'apuki at 16 acres, but now say it's closer to 23. Also, new cracks in the lava delta have been observed, hinting at further collapses.

Thanks for the tips - I've been seriously thinking about visiting Hawaii sometime in the near future. Thinking about the island of Molokai or Kauai - something with a little less traffic. Any suggestions?

Great info.  I was in Hawaii, mainly waikiki beach area (though we toured the entire island) a few years ago.  Some of the cliffs/dropoffs are amazing and definitely require ones respect!

Abraham:  My mother was born and raised on Kauai and if any island I have visited more is there.  It is called the Garden Isle and on one highest point on a mountain is the wettest spot in the world. Beautiful!  Molokai is ranch land....but beautiful...never been there...

Kauchik:  You really need to visit other islands! And yes, respect is a good word with safety!

Sally, Love it! I do miss some things about the islands, you and Randy bring me back. Is there anywhere on the links that cautions visitors not to take lava rock from the Big Island?

Not only a good post, but timely as summer is almost upon us.  I will be there in November with 7 grandchildren, and from experience in Maui and the Big Island I know that the kids don't always pay attention when they are  caught up in the activities.  thank you for these links, they will be quite useful.

Great post Sally.  We have heard so many reports of tourist having accidents in the ocean or on the trails because they do not know what to be careful of or they do not respect the ocean and its dangers.

Lysa:  I'll be following up with that kind of stuff today!

Steph: YUP!  We've had a bunch of stuff on the news...so sad when I hear people drowned...didn't understand the undertows and currents.

Kathy:  I'm sure it'll help a lot of people planning a trip or relocating here!

Sally-you forgot one thing:

I must have the notify me box checked cuz I saw Steve's comment in my e-mail......I was laughing and my grandkids thought I'd lost my mind :)  You have to admit, it was pretty funny. I drank many things with umbrellas while I was there, but I don't think I ever stabbed myself in the eye :)
