Artwork: Selecting Just the Right Piece for each Room

By
Home Stager with Staging Seattle, King & Snohomish Counties

We are constantly purchasing new artwork and usually use between 12 and 20 pieces of art in each staging.

Artwork is truly the "finishing" touch!

Here are examples from some homes we have staged:

Dining Room:  This canvas artwork was selected for this dining room to bring some of the kitchen colors into the dining room, and for it's size.  The blue/green from the kitchen backsplash tile and countertops is reflected in the artwork.

Master Bedroom:  This framed artwork stands in for a headboard, making the bed one of the focal points of the room.  The reflecting pond and stately villa depicted in the artwork give an added bit of elegance to this room.

Media Room:  This space had a niche for a t.v., so we used a faux t.v. with a fabulous city scene.  Also in this room is a colorful poster framed in black.  The colors in the poster enhance the colors in the chair next to it.

Family Room:  Here is another room with a niche for a t.v., but in this space we selected artwork instead of a faux t.v.  This graphic artwork complements the style and colors in this room.

Living Room:  When selecting artwork it is important to have pieces that are the right size for the space.  These two botanicals are large in scale and bookend the furniture arrangement nicely in this room.  The touches of black throughout the space also make this room feel balanced.

Foyer:  The foyer is a great place for art!  This piece is large enough for this grand entry and can also be seen from the den (on the left).

Den:  What better piece of "art" to hang in a den/home office than a large vintage-looking clock?  In this home the den was used by the on-site real estate agents and their clients, so the clock was a practical and decorative element.

Living Room:  In this room we used the large colorful canvas artwork again, which ties in with the blue sofa.  The metal art above the fireplace adds some texture and pattern to this space.  Artwork does not always need to be hung.  The metal art is leaned against the walls above this angled fireplace.

Bathroom:  In a bathroom or powder room it is important to have smaller scale artwork that doesn't overwhelm the space.  In this photo we selected two matted and framed drawings hung above the towel bar.  The frame color coordinates with the oiled bronze finishes and the dark wood in the room.

Great choices Diana.  I love artwork in a bathroom and few people do that.

Diana:  Great artwork choices and great staging.  Here is a tip that I use when builders dicide that the all important electrical panel needs to be a focal point in a room and place it in the middle of a wall.  I hang a piece of framed canvas artwork over the box to hide it.  It needs to have a frame so it will clear the box when it sticks out from the wall.  Traditional artwork which is flat will hang crooked.

Have a great day from the pacific Northwest

Diana~ I love your choice of art in these spaces.  To me, a home isn't staged until just the right art is hung in just the right places.

Nice job Diana! I agree artwork can really make a space and pull all the colors together. I have decided though I am not going to purchase pairs anymore. Too much measuring to get them to line up perfectly!

I too hang a piece of art as a "headboard" or to suggest a hanging TV on a living room wall or over a fireplace. The one thing I have learned is go as big as you can when it comes to artwork.

Great photos Diana! I love your choice of artwork but my favorite is the large clock. It's a little unexpected in a staged home but I love it!

Diana,

Great pictures.  You're right about the importance of artwork especially for balance and color in a room.  Now, if only I'd taken some art classes!

Diana,

These are great art pieces that you are using in your stagings!  I especially love the vibrant colors in the floral piece of art that you used in the dining area.  YOU made an excellent choice with this one,... it really pulls the room together and adds so much life!

Hi Diana, love this post as I love artwork. I had never thought about resting my metal artwork above a fireplace. Great idea!

Totally lovely staging!!!  I have found that even the right artwork in an otherwise unfurnished room will make a big difference, too!

Your picture choices are great and I like how you coordinate the colors with both your furniture and decor items. I often use a picture as the color palette for the entire room.

The picture you used in the Dining Room is wonderful. It is whimsical, cheerful and adds a big impact that makes the room pop. Your staging is lovely and this blog was a lot fun to read with the great photography that you incorporated.

I agree, that artwork is a finishing touch. But I prefer very soft art, nothing too ''screaming''.
