Home Depot under fire

By
Real Estate Agent with Sibcy Cline Realtors®

One of our local television channels has done an investigation on Home Depot. One of the things that they have found is that one home owner had a new roof put on their home and since that was done it leaks. There have also been problems with carpet installation they report. In my area Home Depot has had 66 Better Business complaints in the last 3 years!

Would you recommend a company that had 66 formal complaints in a 3 year period?

Here is a link to the story it will open in a new window.

James,

Thanks for the post and the answer is NO.  I have a close relationship with a builder and I know for a fact he would NEVER, EVER use the installation people the Home Depots, etc. use.  His opinion is that are inferior to the independent subs in most cases (read:  those that can't make it on their own).

If you have a business of any size, you are going to have complaints with the BBB.  The important thing to look at is how the complaints were handled with the customer.

Home Depot has been going through some intense trials and tribulations.  Maybe part of their problem is that they have forgotten what got them to the top in the first place.

No way would I be tempted to use installers for a construction job. It is hard enough to get them to install a refrigerator correctly.

I had a patio door installed from them and it was nothing but a headache.  I would not use them for another install again.

With a business the size of Home Depot I don't see how they can maintain any level of consistent quality with their subcontractors.  I'm sure some are very good.  The ones who installed my garage door did a good job.  And, some are probably pretty bad.  What's the worst that can happen to them?  Home Depot says they won't get any more work?  Well, they are subcontractors and will work for another contractor.  I was at a conference where Nardelli was the keynote speaker right at the point where he took over Home Depot.  He was very sure of himself, almost arrogant.  A couple of us wondered whether he could really take what worked at GE and just apply it to Home Depot, which is a very different business.  I don't think he went into the business with a focus on the customer and as a result, Lowe's has succeeded at Home Depot's expense.
