Do We Take the Conveniences of Life for Granted?

I never thought having things being convenient could be taken for granted until now.

What am I used to?  From my old house, I had 3 different WalMarts and Sams within 4 miles of my house, all in different directions.

Which way do I want to go today?  To help with that decision, know that I also had 4 Home Depots and 2 Lowes in the different directions within 2-5 miles.

Where else might I want to go?  There were 5 grocery stores within 2 miles, Super Target had 3 locations, all within 4 miles from my house.  Do I want to grab lunch or dinner on the way to or from anyplace?  Well, then I had 2 Pei Weis, 2 Outback Steakhouses, 2 Olive Gardens, 5 McDonald's, 2 Chick-fil-a's, 2 Panda's, etc... all within a mile or two of my house.

There are tons more places, but the examples I gave above are about having multiple locations no matter what direction I wanted to go.

Now, my new house...

I had to drive 4 miles to get Pizza last night. I had to drive 5.5 miles to go grocery shopping at the nearest store.  I got sticker price at that store, so I went to WalMart this morning which was 14 miles away!  Yes, 14 miles!  There is a Target outside my community, but it's not a Super Target with groceries.  The closest Super Target is 25 minutes away!

I need some shelving stuff and I had to google Bed Bath & Beyond and The Container Store this evening, and both are 35-40 minutes away... their CLOSEST locations!!

About 4 miles away, they are building, what they call The Galleria, but to me, it's just a bunch of Big Box stores and not an actual "mall".  However, they have Old Navy, Marshalls, Michaels, World Market, and a few other stores, but nothing that I usually shop at.

I guess I'll be changing my "errands" habits.  I usually like to kill a few birds with one stone out the door, but errands are now going to have to be done more planned out as they're all going to be inconvenient.  It took me 2 hours to go to 3 places today.  That is insane!!!

I think I might need a small charter plane to get all my errands done in a timely manner.  Now, that's time management!!

Do you think you take conveniences for granted, or do you live in an area like I described of my new area?

Hi Donna,

Yep, I take things for granted every single day. Most importantly if I'm at the office and left something at home, or vice versa, I'll run back and get it. My business office is less than 2 miles from my house...that's something I really take for granted. Maybe I'll never be able to move, (lol).

It is crazy we are so spoiled with going to different stores when we probably could get it at one and save time

Hmm, 4 miles for a pizza, I guess I do take that for granted, there are probably 5 pizza places within a mile from me, in all different directions, like you said.

You'll adapt and get used to it I'm sure.

Lynda, I used to be that close, and then I got further and further away each time I moved. At my last house, I was 4.2 miles away from my office. Now, I'm 11 miles away... needless to say, I work from home!  11 miles is just WAY too far to drive on a daily basis.

Russ, You might save time, but you won't save money. When there's no competition, the prices are higher. You need competition to keep prices low so people won't store-hop.

Mike, Did I mention it takes 5 minutes just to get from the entrance of my community back to my actual house?  My house is 1.1 miles from the community park... I can't walk that with a toddler. We'll have to drive it...

Donna, this sounds like that classic location location location rule you are experiencing or lack thereof. Location can be highly underestimated till you experience what you are describing. Retail follows rooftops so if enough people are somewhere the stores eventually get closer.

Hi Donna ~

I enjoyed your post (and your graphics are great!!).  I live in a small town that we all affectionately refer to as "the bubble".  When they closed our small grocer and we all learned that we would have to drive (less than 2 miles) to the grocery store, you would have thought the world was coming to an end!!!  But...as a young girl, we used to WALK 10 miles to the closest "convenience" store and thought nothing of it!!!  It is funny how our circumstances change our perspective!!!

Enjoy your new home!

Sandy :-)

You will likely learn to shop a lot more on line and there are things you simply won't shop for at all -- our 2 cents.

Hi Donna, Your area sounds a lot like my mine. I live 8 miles from our Wal-Mart and the closes grocery store is 4 miles. One store that has just came to our area in the past year is Tractor Supply; don't laugh but it has became one of our favorite stores!

As time goes on our area is getting better about attracting various stores. Hang in there I bet things will be changing in your area too as it grows.

Donna,

When I joined the Navy I was subjected to a paid prison so to speak. Naval boot camp isn't physically hard at all. The real challenge of the experience is the "living condition."

I will never forget sitting on the cold cement floor by my bunk longing for a cup of coffee and actual blanket that didn't feel like a green scouring pad.

The creature comforts of life. I totality understand being spoiled by what your used to.

The change will do you good, I hope.

Donna,

I live out in the sticks.  You learn quickly to remember to go to the store because to forget is to

pay an arm and a leg at the local store 4 miles away.  However, I like my house so it is worth it to me.

Hi Donna... it's really the adjustment that is difficult.  Once you adapt to the new environment and coonditions it will become more routine and less noticably difficult.  Hang in there... Austin really has some very nice compensating factors!

I know what you mean.  When we moved to Conroe we were so far out that Pizza Inn would not even deliver to us.  It took years to get cable and DSL.  It was a lot like being Amish

Gary, According to the signs, there are "only" 656 people in Bee Cave.  I'm sure that's gone up to around 1000 if the number was from the 2000 census.  People are here, and they're starting to build, but why a brand new Target without it being a SUPER Target?

Sandy, You had to walk 10 miles to the store?  That would be an all day journey to get there and back, and also be carrying groceries?  yikes!

B & C, You're probably right.

Teresa, Tractor Supply has groceries? LOL

Greg, Are those blankets made of wool?  I would never survive!

Brenda, I hope I like this house enough for it to be worth it!

Steve, I hear Hamilton Pool waterfall thingy is pretty nice and that's just a couple of miles away.

Richard, I felt Amish when I moved to Sachse in 2002, a suburb of Dallas.  I didn't want that again!

Donna - I'm sure that I take my conveniences for granted.  I don't have 2 of everything, but I do pretty much have 1 of just about anything I could want nearby... :)

Debi, No multiples?  You better hope it stays that way before you're spoiled and won't be able to move!

Joseph, THank you!
