About 1200 Snapping Turtles reside in the National Audubon Society Constitution Marsh, just below Boscobel in Garrsion.

Each year the female turtles climb up the steep hill to lay their eggs on the lawn - on Saturday June 9th at 7AM.

Members of Marsh Staff will discuss the habits and history of these fascinating creatures, which were designated in 2006, as New York State's official reptile.

Weighing in at 40 lbs, snapping turtles can live to be 100 years old.

After the discussion, guests can walk the grounds searching for the females as they lay their eggs.

I have decided to NOT ATTEND this exciting event.

Turtles are so cool.  I have a cat named Turtle but that's just because she's slow.

Once or twice a year we'll come across a big snapper strolling through the fairway at my golf course.  Someone will inevitably test the turtle's merit by placing a large stick in front of it and watching it bite through it like a hot knife through butter.  It's really neat to see how powerful these "slow" creatures can be.

Janice,

I am a big fan of the 'box turtle', but these snapping turtles scare the bejeebers out of me!  I hope to never cross paths with one!

Thanks for sharing the interesting info and pictures about the egg-laying!
