Two Kane County schools to close with probable swine flu cases
The Kane County Health Department today recommended that the Rotolo Middle School in Batavia and the Marmion Academy in Aurora close temporarily following the identification of a probable swine flu case in each of the schools. This is a preventive measure designed to help break the cycle of disease transmission and protect students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the larger community.
The Health Department further recommends that extracurricular activities be cancelled and that staff, faculty, students do not gather together outside of school since that would defeat the goal of disrupting disease transmission. The Kane County Health Department is working closely with school officials to protect all the students, staff and faculty.
"In addition the Kane County Health Department is opening a call center for residents who have questions about the swine flu: (630) 208-3315. The call line will be open from 8 am-8 pm on week days and from 9 am -1 pm on Saturday.
HERE'S SOME FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SWINEFLU
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
The Health Department is recommending that residents who are experiencing symptoms such as fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing to seek medical advice by either calling or visiting their doctor. The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular seasonal influenza. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
