Our mayor's secretary in Broadview Heights, Ohio sends us regular e-mail messages from the mayor's office to keep us informed about the city. Yesterday we received a brief reminder to remember to call 811 before we or our contractor do any digging on our property. I had not heard of this before so I did a little research.

In the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2002, Congress mandated the establishment of a national 3 digit number. In 2005 the FCC established 811 as the "National Call Before You Dig" phone number and all states were required to implement it by April 13, 2007.

Nationally it is estimated that 400,000 incidents of accidental damage occur every year from excavation and approximately 40% occurred when people did not call a local one call center. Read more about the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act.

excavationSo call before you dig or make sure you or your contractor calls 811 and you could potentially save yourself a lot of headaches!

You are very welcome. That's useful info. I had no idea it was national. I thought it was a local thing. Very cool. :-)

I saw someone planting bushes around a power box the other day. I was thinking about the diggers hotline thanks again.

Shane, I think most people feel it's harmless to plant a few bushes until you hit a line of some sort.
